On November 26, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a 10-second video on its official YouTube page. Entitled “A Silent Night Teaser,” the video referenced a surprise to come.

“We’re lighting the world this Christmas by taking over the heart of New York City with a Silent Night surprise to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Tune in on December 1st, at 9am MST to see it unfold,” the official video description read.

The video description also pointed to the Giving Machines, a burgeoning holiday tradition for people around the world.

“Another part of Light the World is the Giving Machines—vending machines with a twist. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partners each year with global charities and local nonprofits to allow people to donate items to people in need, from a goat for a Syrian refugee to clean water for schools in Africa. They have raised more than $22 million since 2017. Learn more or find one near you at”

Though no other information about this “Silent Night surprise” is yet available, this author would guess we’re in for a live-streamed musical performance of some sort. For past Christmas projects, the Church has often collaborated with celebrities, performing artists, and organizations, to help light the world.

In 2014, The Piano Guys, Peter Hollens, David Archuleta, and thousands of others gathered to break a world record by hosting the world’s largest nativity. The attempt was featured in a music video that now has over 90 million views across three channels.

This year multiple celebrities have endorsed the machines, including Travis Kelce, Paul Rudd, Marie Osmond, and more.

Make sure to follow LDS Daily for more updates on this story as it comes. What do you think the surprise will be?
