Elder Gérald Caussé has been called as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to Church Newsroom, his call took place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, and he was ordained the same day by President Dallin H. Oaks along with the other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. This moment marks a new chapter in Elder Caussé’s lifelong commitment to discipleship and service in the Church.

Following his ordination, Elder Caussé shared a testimony rooted in years of faith and devotion. “I’ve always had a testimony of Jesus Christ,” he said. “He’s always been in the center of my life. I know Jesus Christ lives. And I know He’s our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That’s the best responsibility or stewardship we might have in our lives.”

Apostles serve as “special witnesses of the name of Christ throughout the world” and take on major administrative responsibilities in the global Church. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the Church’s second-highest presiding body, working under the direction of the First Presidency.

Before this new calling, Elder Caussé spent many years overseeing the practical and compassionate work of the Church as Presiding Bishop, including global welfare operations, humanitarian outreach, and the stewardship of sacred funds and facilities. His appointment to this role was notable in part because he brought a French background to an office historically filled by U.S.–born leaders, and is the first to do so speaking English as a second language.

Before becoming Presiding Bishop, Elder Caussé served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric from 2012 to 2015 and as a General Authority Seventy from 2008 to 2012. The responsibilities of his callings have led the Caussé family to relocate multiple times, adapting to new countries and cultures along the way. Assignments as a General Authority first led the Caussés to Germany and later to the United States, moves that required sacrifice and resilience from their children.

“That was not an easy thing to do,” Elder Caussé reflected. “We admire them for being so consecrated. They never complained. They moved with us and changed life. And those who stayed in France, we admire them for not having their parents nearby for now 17 years.” Sister Caussé also noted the quiet faith of their children, saying, “One of them told us she cried every night, but she didn’t tell us anything besides encouragement. We’re so proud of them.”

Elder Caussé was born on May 20, 1963, in Bordeaux, France, to Jean Caussé and Marie-Blanche Bonnet Caussé. He moved to Paris at age 19 for military service and later began dating Valérie Babin, whom he had known since childhood.

Both were raised in second-generation Latter-day Saint homes, with Elder Caussé’s parents being baptized when he was six months old and Valérie’s parents joining the Church when she was three. They were sealed in the Bern Switzerland Temple on August 5, 1986, and their family eventually grew to include five children.

Throughout his ministry, Elder Caussé has spoken often to young people about their essential role in the Lord’s work. While speaking to young adults in 2025, he emphasized the central role they play in the Lord’s work, teaching that the gathering of Israel is an active, ongoing mission for this generation: “The work of the gathering of Israel is the most important thing taking place today — and as Latter-day Saints, they are called to be part of it.”

He encouraged them to trust that their personalities, backgrounds, and gifts are intentionally part of God’s plan for how they can bless the world, teaching, “The Church needs you — not in spite of who you are, but because of who you are. Each of you brings unique gifts and life experiences that are essential to fulfilling the Lord’s purposes.”

He has also emphasized care for God’s creations and stewardship for both the earth and one another. Speaking to young professionals in Brazil in 2023, he explained, “God has entrusted us with stewardship over His creations, including that of caring for His children — our brothers and sisters. Acting in this stewardship is a way of sharing the love that our Creator extends to us. Every disciple of Christ should feel the importance of blessing their families and the community in which they live.”

Most recently, Elder Caussé’s general conference teachings centered on the hope available in Jesus Christ. “This message of hope and comfort is for all of us, children of God,” he said in April 2025. “None of us can escape the challenges and limitations of mortality. After all, we are all born with an inherent incapacity to save ourselves. Yet we have a loving Savior, and ‘we know that it is by [His] grace that we are saved, after all we can do’ (2 Nephi 25:23).”

As Elder Gérald Caussé steps forward to serve as a special witness of Jesus Christ, his ministry continues to reflect warmth, humility, steadiness, and devotion to the Savior. His life’s path—rooted in faith across continents, callings, languages, challenges, and growth—now enters a sacred new phase of testimony and leadership in blessing a worldwide Church.

He was the person I thought of immediately after there was a vacancy. I have admired him for a long time.

I was not surprised. I know he was called by The Lord to be His special witness during these latter days.

Elder Causse is not the first Apostle to have English as a second language. Elder Uchtdorf (Germany) and Elder Soares (Brazil) both have English as a second language.

Six years ago, Elder Causse visited the Haitian Boston 3rd Ward and now Oakhill Ward in Boston, Massachusetts. We all knew then and now that he is a man called by God. The Haitian Ward shouted with Joy to have someone who speaks our language in our presence. We adore Elder Causse and his wife. Elder Causse, We, the Oakhill Ward, love and sustain you. Congratulations!
