The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement today about the health of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.

After an extended hospital stay, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is now recuperating at home. Elder Holland and his children are very grateful for the many prayers offered on his behalf during this health challenge and time of sorrow following the passing of Sister Holland. As his health improves, he looks forward to resuming active service in his ministry.

In early 2023, Elder Holland was excused from assignments to prioritize his health. He did not speak at the April 2023 General Conference.

In June, it was announced that he would return to his apostolic duties. However, his wife, Sister Patricia Terry Holland passed away on July 20, 2023, after an unexpected hospitalization. On August 3, Elder Holland had returned to the hospital.

Though he could not speak at his wife’s funeral due to his health issues, Elder Holland had his son read a tribute. He said, “I am heartbroken. I thought the onset of neuropathy and dialysis was enough, but this loss of Pat so unexpectedly has been devastating. I feel the sustaining power of your prayers and I’m grateful.”

You can watch a video below where Elder Holland expressed his gratitude in June for the prayers of the Saints after his first hospitalization and recovery period.

As the news about Elder Holland’s return home was shared, multiple members of the Church shared their well-wishes. One woman wrote, “So grateful he has been spared for us. Can’t imagine going through these last days without his tenderness. We need you Elder Holland!”

A member said, “So glad you are home. Nothing quite like home. You and your family are in our prayers that you may be blessed with comfort and peace. We love you and are grateful for the life you have led. Thank you.”

“We are so thankful for you and the service you have given the Lord,” wrote another. “It has been a great blessing in my life. Your sweet wife is my shining example. I am now determined to carry my Book of Mormon everywhere.”

It is uncertain at this time when Elder Holland will resume his duties or if he’ll speak at the upcoming October 2023 General Conference. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
