The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will introduce several new guest experiences at Temple Square in the coming months, including additions to the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and Conference Center and new presentations projected onto the Salt Lake Tabernacle dome. According to a Church Newsroom release, guests will have access to the experiences before, during and after the Salt Lake Temple Celebration.

The Church of Jesus Christ will add four experiences inside the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, with spaces focused on Sunday worship, the life of Jesus Christ and opportunities for families to learn together. Other additions across Temple Square will explore prophets, personal revelation and the purpose of temples while giving guests new ways to learn about Jesus Christ.

In the Joseph Smith Memorial Building chapel on the mezzanine level, guests will learn about the role Sunday worship plays in the lives of Latter-day Saints. Videos will feature Church members describing how Sunday worship affects their daily lives, while the presentation will also explain the sacrament, which many other Christian faiths call Communion.

The experience will describe the sacrament as the central part of weekly worship and focus on its purpose of remembering the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The chapel experience will combine that explanation with firsthand perspectives from Church members about worship beyond the weekly meeting itself.

A new Life of Christ Theater will use surround-screen imagery and sound to place guests within scenes from the Savior’s ministry. The presentation will invite visitors to imagine witnessing the baptism of Jesus Christ or standing among His disciples when He calmed the stormy sea.

The Church will also create a Life of Christ Children’s Area specifically for children and families, using interactive storybooks and other hands-on activities to teach about the Savior. Young guests will explore His parables, teachings, attributes and divine mission through activities designed for their age group.

A separate Life of Christ Lobby will provide space for visitors to rest and reflect while viewing scenes from the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Together, the theater, children’s area and lobby will give guests several different ways to engage with accounts of His life.

Conference Center Galleries Will Explore Prophets and Revelation

The Conference Center will receive new galleries and displays centered on the teaching that God calls prophets and that prophetic teachings draw people closer to God and Jesus Christ. The exhibits will include artwork, scripture, a replica of Bertel Thorvaldsen’s “Christus” statue and an interactive experience focused on personal revelation.

The Conference Center balcony will also become part of the guest experience through its expansive views of the Salt Lake Temple. From that space, visitors will be invited to reflect on the purpose and blessings of temples and on how the house of the Lord brings people closer to Jesus Christ.

Tabernacle Dome Will Become a Projection Surface

Inside the Salt Lake Tabernacle, the Church will introduce five- to eight-minute presentations projected directly onto the building’s domed ceiling. The projections will depict themes connected to Jesus Christ and His ministry, turning the interior of the historic gathering space into the setting for another visitor experience.

The Church plans to publish showtimes through the Temple Square website and Temple Square app. The dome presentations will join the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and Conference Center offerings as part of the collection of experiences available to Temple Square guests surrounding the Salt Lake Temple Celebration.

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who also serves as a member of the Missionary Executive Council, said the common purpose of the new offerings is to direct visitors toward Jesus Christ. “These new Temple Square experiences have been designed to help all guests learn of Jesus Christ. He is the focus,” Elder Renlund said.

Elder Renlund also expressed hope that the experiences will affect the millions of people who visit Temple Square each year. “We hope and pray that the millions of guests who come to Temple Square every year and engage with these new experiences will be inspired and come to know their Savior better.”
