President Russell M. Nelson Shares Health Update, Thanks Those Praying for His Recovery

President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shared the following message to his social media channels on Friday, November 10, 2023.

Thank you for your prayers for me during the last two months. My recovery from my fall in September when I injured the muscles in my back has been rigorous. I have needed your prayers.

The apostle James taught that the effectual fervent prayers of righteous men and women “availeth much.” Your prayers opened the heavens, and the Lord is blessing me.

Your prayers have lifted my spirits and bolstered my courage and my great desire to soldier on. In short, the Lord has responded to your prayers and expressions of love, and He is helping me to heal.

I am grateful to report that throughout the last two months, I have been able to attend most meetings of the First Presidency virtually. Now I am slowly returning to the office on selected days while continuing to use technology as needed.

The work of the Lord continues to move on, under His direction. Thirty-six new missions will be created in 2024. The Lord is truly hastening His work, and we are blessed to be part of it.

Thank you again, my dear brothers and sisters. You have blessed me to feel the power of prayer and the reality of the Lord’s love in a most personal way. I love you!

Members continued to share their love and support across social media.

Cheryl wrote, “SO thankful you’re feeling better, President Nelson! We all love you so much and appreciate all the wise words from the Lord you share with us! You are an inspiration and example as you serve Him and His children! I often use quotes from your talks as my computer wallpaper to remind me of things I need to be doing….”

Jay said, “I love you so much, President Nelson!!! I’m glad you’re healing well. I absolutely love that scripture in the book of James about prayer and how righteousness makes it more effective. Thank you for reminding of us of it. I had a minor surgery recently, and prayers were more than answered. I was supposed to expect pain during recovery, and I have not had any! I’m past the one week mark of my surgery. Thank you so much for your inspired leadership!”

Mindy said, “Hooray! Such great news to be back in the office! So wonderful to see you sitting behind your big beautiful desk.”

On September 28, President Nelson shared that he had injured his back. He wrote:

Three weeks ago, I fell and injured the muscles in my lower back. This episode has reminded me of the reality that things sometimes change quickly in our lives. This photo of my counselors and me was taken at the celebration of my 99th birthday. Two days later, I fell.

Thankfully, my healing is progressing. But as my physician says, “We don’t have much data on how 99-year-olds recover from an injury like this one, so I am prescribing a slow, careful approach to healing so that you achieve a full recovery.” Having prescribed just such a course of action for many of my own patients years ago, I feel duty-bound to follow doctor’s orders.

I am still not able to sit in a chair for long periods of time. However, I am hoping to record my general conference message and look forward to participating in this marvelous October 2023 general conference through technology.

I pray that each of us, wherever we may be, will approach this sacred weekend with our hearts full of gratitude for the privilege of hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed by His servants. May this general conference be a time of joy and spiritual rejuvenation for you. I know that it will be for me!
