Salt Lake Temple’s Latest Renovations Revealed in Breathtaking New Photos

New photographs from inside the Salt Lake City Temple show the scope of the breathtaking detail as renovations continue on the historic building. 

Inside the temple, teams are focusing on restoring hand-painted ceilings, gilded moldings, and intricate woodwork, all while respecting the temple’s original design.

One of the most important aspects of the restoration is the work on the ceilings, which are being carefully repainted and repaired. This involves restoring the original colors and patterns that have defined the temple’s interior for over a century. Along with the ceilings, gold leaf is being reapplied, and detailed stencil designs are being redone, ensuring the temple’s original aesthetic is preserved.

Crews are also working on the iconic wood paneling and beams throughout the temple. This includes repairing and replicating the ornate wood elements and intricate stenciling that have become synonymous with the Salt Lake Temple. As the wood elements have aged over the years, the team is carefully restoring them to maintain their original beauty.

The Salt Lake Temple has always been a work in progress. After the groundbreaking in 1853, the temple took more than 40 years to complete, with the final dedication taking place in 1893. Over the years, the temple has undergone several updates and repairs to address the wear and tear from both time and use. The current restoration focuses on ensuring the temple’s long-term preservation, making sure it remains a sacred space for future generations.

This renovation process isn’t just about making the temple look beautiful; it’s about preserving its legacy and ensuring it can continue to serve as a place of worship and reflection. The restoration team is dedicated to making sure that, while the temple is updated with modern materials and techniques, the sacredness and historical value of the building are respected.

When the restoration is finished, the Salt Lake Temple will stand as a testament to both its rich history and its continued importance to the Latter-day Saint community.

Two new statues have also recently been added and are now part of the Temple Square experience.

The first stands near the Priesthood restoration monuments and is called “Joseph Smith Receives the Plates.” It features the events of September 22, 1827, when the Angel Moroni gave the gold plates to Joseph on the Hill Cumorah. The statue was created by Leroy Transfield. 

 

The second is “Five Wise Virgins,” inspired by the biblical parable, and was referenced by President Camille N. Johnson in her most recent General Conference talk.
