In an update released on the Church Newsroom, Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff announced a small number of missionaries have been able to return or go to their original assignments in Europe and Asia. His full statement from August 7, 2020, reads:
Over the last several weeks, the Church has been able to send a small number of missionaries to their original assignments in some places in Europe and Asia. In these circumstances, missionaries have proper travel documentation and strictly follow local requirements concerning self-isolation or quarantine. As they continue their service in these areas, the missionaries take part in activities appropriate to local circumstances. Additional travel of missionaries to assignments outside their home countries is dependent upon local conditions and travel restrictions.
As the COVID-19 pandemic began to take hold in March 2020, thousands of missionaries returned to their home countries and were reassigned to local missions. Early releases were extended and the Provo Missionary Training Center closed indefinitely. No large-scale announcement has been made about when missionaries may or may not return to their original assignments in foreign countries.
