1814: William Clayton, later secretary to Joseph Smith and hymn composer (“Come, Come, Ye Saints”), is born in Penwortham, England.
1894: U.S. president Grover Cleveland signs the Utah Statehood Bill, authorizing Utah to hold a constitutional convention.
