1844: The Nauvoo City Council declares the Nauvoo Expositor, published by dissidents, a public nuisance. Under the direction of the mayor and the city council, the marshal destroys the type and press. These actions begin the process that eventually leads to the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.
