1850: Congress approves an act creating the territory of Utah.
1924: Russell M. Nelson, later a heart surgeon and President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is born in Salt Lake City, Utah.
1978: A new missionary training program is announced, requiring English-speaking missionaries to receive four weeks of training and missionaries learning other languages to receive the standard eight weeks of training at the new Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah.
