The word of God given us in scripture is, indeed, an iron rod which leads us on the path of eternal life. There the truth is spelled out; it can be held on to; it has been tried in the experience of generations. But not all truth brings a long tradition of acceptance with it. It requires us to know it when we see it. The Spirit must witness these things to us, make us recognize them as true–as of God. —Aileen H. Clyde

1800: Jacob Whitmer, later one of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, is born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
1852: As a missionary to Hawaii, George Q. Cannon begins translating the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian.
1985: Members of the Church in Canada and the United States hold a special fast to raise money for victims of famine in Africa and other parts of the world; they raise $6.5 million dollars.
