1840: Joseph Smith leaves Washington D.C., to return to Nauvoo, having gone there to petition U.S. president Martin Van Buren and the U.S. Congress to redress the Saints for their losses in Missouri.
1907: Ending a five-year battle, the U.S. Senate votes to allow Elder Reed Smoot, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and a Republican senator from Utah, to retain his seat in the Senate. Some senators had accused him of practicing plural marriage.
