1833: Joseph Smith writes a letter from Kirkland to bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, advising the Missouri Saints, who had recently been driven from Jackson County, against selling their lands even though they no longer possessed them. He counsels them to seek every lawful mean for redress.
1990: Ty Detmer, a BYU quarterback, receives the Heisman Trophy from the New York Downtown Athletic Club, Recognizing him as the best college football player in America.
1993: With the creation of the Sao Leopoldo Brazil Stake, Brazil becomes the second country outside the United States to have one hundred stakes. Valmir Severo Dutra is called as president of the new stake.
1998: Ground is broken for the Columbia South Carolina Temple. Elder Gordon T. Watts, a member of the second quorum of the seventy and first counselor in the North America Southeast Area Presidency, presides over the ceremony.
