1953 U.S. Supreme Court justice Fred M. Vinson administers the oath of office for the new secretary of agriculture, Elder Ezra Taft Benson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
1983 The First Presidency issues a statement reinforcing the policy that members of the Church are expected to pay local, state, and federal taxes.
1995 Church membership reaches nine million.
