1844 A mob kills Joseph and Hyrum Smith at Carthage Jail.
1972 Latter-day Saint missionaries enter the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia for the first time.
1989 One hundred and forty-five years after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, President Gordon B. Hinckley of the First Presidency dedicates the restored Carthage Jail complex in Illinois.
