1988: President Thomas S. Monson meets with officials of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and asks for permission for the Church to call missionaries to and from the country. Government officials later grant his requests.
1999: President Gordon B. Hinckley breaks ground for the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Temple.
