One of your dates is wrong. The California mission wasn’t officially organized until 1892. Members of the Church first landed in California on the Brooklyn in 1846. However, according to the Church’s website, missionary work unofficially occurred in the state off-and-on for decades after members came. It wasn’t until August 1892 that the California mission was established permanently.

Thanks for the heads up and the kind words! This Church history page says in multiple places that the mission was formed in 1846 and had mission presidents leading the work from 1847 on—but the page URL says 1892, and it’s true that that was the year the mission was “established permanently with no more closures”—so perhaps both dates are correct, depending on how you look at it.
