1844: Joseph and Hyrum Smith die at the hands of a mob in Carthage Jail. The martyrdom of the Prophet and Patriarch is remembered in Doctrine and Covenants 135.
1972: Latter-day Saint missionaries enter the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia for the first time.
1989: One hundred and forty-five years after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, President Gordon B. Hinckley of the First Presidency dedicates the restored Carthage Jail complex in Illinois.
2002: The rebuilt Nauvoo Illinois Temple is dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
