Struggling With the New Young Women Group Names? Watch This

If you’ve heard the new Young Women age group names out loud and thought, “Wait… are we starting a fantasy league?” you’re not alone. A lot of the reactions floating around right now are somewhere between “I love the idea” and “I physically cannot say these without cringing a little.”

There’s something about saying a brand-new phrase in a familiar setting that just feels awkward at first. Like the first time you tried to say “ministering brothers” instead of home teachers and your brain short-circuited mid-sentence.

The comments online have been exactly what you’d expect. People saying the names feel “clunky and odd to say,” that they “don’t really roll off the tongue,” or wondering who exactly “was in the focus group and was okay with these names.”

One person admitted it felt like “we’re referring to a fantasy novel,” while another said, “The idea for sure but the names? Nope.”

Then along comes Emily Susan Pack with a post that basically says, “Ok, I get it—but also, you haven’t really heard them yet.” If you’re familiar with her, this is kind of her lane.

Emily is a rising star among Latter-day Saint social media influencers who writes catchy, slightly tongue-in-cheek tunes that poke a little fun at our shared quirks. But she also writes soulful, faith-affirming songs that give you all the warm and fuzzy feels.

Only a day after the Church’s announcement, Emily has created a simple but powerful song that weaves the new Young Women group names with imagery of the goodness that Builders, Messengers, and Gatherers will share as they witness of, lift toward, and reflect the love of Christ.

While others heard cheesy slogans, Emily heard the music in the names and instantly transformed them into something that had one commenter gushing, “Is there anywhere to get sheet music for this song? … It gives beautiful meaning to their new names so powerfully through music!”

Her caption is doing a lot of the heavy lifting too. She doesn’t pretend the names instantly land perfectly. She jokes about sitting with people “in their pain,” which is probably the most accurate description of trying to say “Builders of Faith,” “Messengers of Hope,” or “Gatherers of Light” out loud for the first time in a church hallway.

But instead of getting stuck on whether the names sound smooth, Emily points back to what the Young Women program actually did for her. It gave her confidence, space to grow, people who didn’t panic when she had questions, and a place where her talents mattered.

She even talks about learning music in that setting and realizing she could bear her testimony in a different way, which makes her song feel like proof of what that environment can produce.

And the gratitude in the comments is palpable. She’s got people saying, “I haven’t been sure how to feel about the new names… thank you for this song,” or “I’m one struggling with the names, but this song is really beautiful.”

And then there are the ones that take a sharper turn. Someone who said their first reaction was “this is stupid” also admitted the song softened their heart. Another said they were “put off” at first, but after letting it sit, they “now find them beautiful.”

Still, some skepticism remains. One leader admitted feeling “very awkward about the names” but still being “willing to roll with it,” which honestly might be the most relatable response of all.

We like things that feel natural right away, and for many of us, these and countless other things we’re asked to do as disciples simply don’t. But if you give it a minute, the awkwardness fades into the background.

Or at least becomes the kind of awkward you laugh about later.

So no, you don’t have to pretend these names are your favorite thing ever. You can have questions about how to practically implement them, or what role they will have beyond labeling age groups.

But it might be worth sticking around long enough to see what they grow into, because if the past is any indicator, the Young Women program itself is still going to do what it’s always done.

It’ll turn them into a source of inspiration, unity, and strength—one foundation of faith that, decades from now, will be remembered fondly by countless covenant women all over the world.
