Lucky to have gotten a hold of recasts of the Joseph and Hyrum Smith death masks years ago for my paintings. Nevertheless it is still a challenge to get those eye sockets right, and their expression, the direction of his gaze, the way the flesh hangs about the mouth when smiling, and then paint it with the freshness of an alla prima painter.
