Book of Mormon Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – “This Is the Way”

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

Near the end of his life, Nephi shared in great simplicity the gospel path and invited all to rely on Jesus Christ. This Book of Mormon FHE lesson teaches us how to embrace the Doctrine of Christ and follow in the footsteps of the Savior throughout our lives. Our FHE lessons include three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

2 Nephi 31:21

And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.

Press Forward, Saints | Hymn #81

1. Press forward, Saints, with steadfast faith in Christ,
With hope’s bright flame alight in heart and mind,
With love of God and love of all mankind.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. Press forward, feasting on the word of Christ.
Receive his name, rejoicing in his might.
Come unto God; find everlasting light.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

3. Press on, enduring in the ways of Christ.
His love proclaim thru days of mortal strife.
Thus saith our God: “Ye have eternal life!”
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Begin the lesson with the following activity. Place your treat for the night on a small table. Line up your children across from it. The gap between where they stand and the treats should be larger than any of them can jump. Instruct them that if they can jump from where they stand to the treat, they can have one.

After everyone has made an attempt, tell the children you will be trying again, except this time you’ll be giving them a little help. Place five pieces of construction paper in a path to the treat. Tell the children they are allowed to step on the pieces of paper. Everyone should be able to make it to the plate and take a treat. Have everyone sit back down.

Ask: Why was this activity hard at first? What made it easier the second time?

Read aloud: In the scriptures, we learn Jesus Christ has a path for us. When we follow the path, we return home to our Heavenly Father. We get to enjoy eternal life.

On the five pieces of paper, write down the following:

  • Faith
  • Repentance
  • Baptism
  • Receiving the Holy Ghost
  • Enduring to the End

Go through each piece of paper, asking the children what each one means. Based on the needs of your family or group, you may want to spend more time discussing a certain principle.

Read aloud: When we follow these principles, we can return to live with God again. However, we have to do them over and over again. We show faith, repent of our mistakes, renew our promises at baptism by taking the sacrament, listen to the Spirit, and keep going even if things get hard.

Ask: What is one principle you want to learn more about?

Set goals to help each child learn more about the principle they picked. Finish the lesson with your testimony.

Begin the lesson by having everyone work in pairs or small groups. Ask them to imagine talking to someone who doesn’t know about Jesus Christ. Have them come up with the simplest way to describe the path back to God. Share what you came up with together.

Read aloud: As Nephi neared the end of his life, he desired to speak plainly about Jesus Christ. His teachings focus on what we now call the Doctrine of Christ. The Doctrine of Christ encompasses the steps we need to take that will bring us closer to Jesus so we can find joy, peace, and direction in our life.

Write down the five principles of the Doctrine of Christ (Faith, Repentance, Baptism, Receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and Enduring to the End). Give everyone a minute to think about which principle they want to improve on this upcoming week or learn more about.

Together, read through 2 Nephi 31:13-21. Instruct everyone to pay specific attention to anything they learn or notice about the principle they picked.

Ask: What did you learn about your principle? What do these verses teach us about following Jesus Christ?

Read aloud: The Doctrine of Christ is simple in the sense that we know what God has asked us to do and we have all the resources and teachings we need to follow Him. However, applying these principles into our daily lives can be hard.

Ask: What holds us back from living these principles daily? How can we overcome these things?

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

Read or listen to Dale G. Renlund’s BYU Devotional “Lifelong Conversion” and think about how you can better live the doctrine of Christ and endure to the end.
