Book of Mormon Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – A Mighty Change of Heart

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

King Benjamin’s people experienced a mighty change of heart because of their faith in Christ and willingness to follow Him. In this Book of Mormon FHE lesson, you’ll learn what it means to have a mighty change of heart, how we can strive to obtain one, and the role of the Holy Ghost. Our FHE lessons include three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

Mosiah 5:2

And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.

You Can Make the Pathway Bright | Hymn #228

1. You can make the pathway bright,
Fill the soul with heaven’s light,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
Turning darkness into day,
As the shadows fly away,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

If there’s sunshine in your heart,
You can send a shining ray
That will turn the night to day;
And your cares will all depart,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

2. You can speak the gentle word
To the heart with anger stirred,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
Tho it seems a little thing,
It will heaven’s blessings bring,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

3. You can do a kindly deed
To your neighbor in his need,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
And his burden you will share
As you lift his load of care,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

4. You can live a happy life
In this world of toil and strife,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
And your soul will glow with love
From the perfect Light above,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

Begin the lesson with the following activity. Gather together plates (ideally with a small curve/dip in them), skittles candy, and warm water. Have the children place the skittles in a heart shape on their plate. Carefully pour the warm water onto the plate. In a few minutes, the colors will start to run together. Describe how the water represents the gospel of Jesus Christ, who is living water. Have the children discuss what happened to the skittles.

Read aloud: After King Benjamin taught his people the gospel from his tower, they all believed him. They even cried out in one voice that they believed and that a mighty change had happened to them. They were willing to make promises to God and follow Him.

Because of Jesus Christ, we can have a mighty change of heart. When our heart changes, everything changes. We think differently. We act differently. We see God differently. We see ourselves and everyone around us differently.

Ask: How do you think a heart changes?

Read aloud: Jesus Christ changes our hearts in many ways, but the most powerful way is through the Holy Ghost. When we feel the Spirit, we’re changing.

Ask: When do you feel the Spirit?

Discuss as a family a few ways you want to feel the spirit more in your home. If time and circumstances permit, share a personal experience when your heart was changed and what you learned. Finish with your testimony.

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Before pressing play, ask everyone to think of how they might be able to relate to this young man’s experience and what it teaches us about a mighty change of heart.

Ask: What does this video teach us about having a mighty change of heart?

Read aloud: As we follow Jesus Christ, we are promised our hearts will change. In the scriptures, the symbolic heart is often used to describe our state of being. Hearts can be pure, cold, broken, or set upon good things. In the Book of Mormon, the people of King Benjamin experienced this mighty change.

As a group read Mosiah 5:1-7 aloud. Have everyone pay attention to the specific actions the people took.

Ask: What did the people do to show their hearts had changed? How can we follow their example?

Share a personal experience about a time when your heart experienced a change. Have others share as time permits.

Ask: What do we do if we feel like we’ve tried everything we know, but don’t feel our hearts have changed?

Discuss how mighty changes can often be small and occur over time. If you’re able, discuss how to hold onto big spiritual moments, which are rarer. Finish with your testimony.

Watch the video in the activity section below. Then, go to the topical guide and study the scriptures found under the word “heart.” Ponder on which scriptures relate most to your experience. Make one goal of how you will try to invite the Spirit to change your hear this upcoming week.
