Alma taught his son Helaman that the small and simple things can help bring about great and marvelous things. This Book of Mormon FHE lesson helps us understand the importance of small, consistent actions and what to do when they don’t very effective or powerful.

Now ye may suppose that this is in me; but behold I say unto you, that by and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.

Hymn
When Faith Endures | Hymn #128
I will not doubt, I will not fear;
God’s love and strength are always near.
His promised gift helps me to find
An inner strength and peace of mind.
I give the Father willingly
My trust, my prayers, humility.
His Spirit guides; his love assures
That fear departs when faith endures.

Lesson
FOR CHILDREN
Begin by showing the children a small seed. Ask them how seeds grow and what they need to do to take care of a seed. If you’re able, show them the picture of what the seed will grow into. If you have a garden or plants in your home, you can use those as well.
Read aloud: In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Alma is teaching his son Helaman about the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the things Alma teaches Helaman is that small and simple things can make great things happen. Just like taking care of a little tiny seed can make a great big plant, we can take a tiny testimony and grow it.
Ask: How do we grow our testimonies?
Read aloud: We grow our testimonies by reading the scriptures, praying, going to church, serving others, and making covenants with God. These can all seem really simple at first. They may not even seem really powerful or that they do much. But over time, we can notice our faith growing stronger and stronger.
Ask: What is something simple you want to do this week to grow your testimony?
Finish the lesson by setting goals and bearing your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Before pressing play, ask everyone to think about what this video teaches about doing small and simple things.
Read aloud: When Alma taught his son Helaman about this principle, it was in the context of continuing to preserve the brass plates. The plates were to be handed down from generation to generation because it had been prophesied that they would go forth to every nation, kindred and tongue. Alma tells Helaman that he recognizes this may be considered foolish, even by his sons.
Ask: Why do we sometimes disregard the power of the small and simple things? What can we do to prevent feeling that they are foolish?
Read aloud: We won’t always see how the small and simple things we do have an effect on our lives. Sometimes, we won’t see the results for many years. Like Alma, who wasn’t alive to witness the flooding of the world with the Book of Mormon, we may not fully understand the purpose of our actions until the next life. However, we can have faith through Jesus Christ that by diligently doing all we can to stay on the covenant path we will help move the kingdom of God along in our own lives and in the lives of others.
Ask: What small and simple things have been a blessing in your life?
Finish the lesson by sharing personal experiences and your testimony.
