Book of Mormon Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – We Lived After the Manner of Happiness

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

The people of Nephi faced many challenges, but they worked hard, follow God, built a temple, and found joy. Though we live in a world of turmoil, we too can live after the manner of happiness as we strive to follow Jesus Christ. This FHE lesson helps us understand God’s form of happiness and how we can achieve it no matter our circumstances.

Hymn

Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel | Hymn #252

1. The world has need of willing men
Who wear the worker’s seal.
Come, help the good work move along;
Put your shoulder to the wheel.
Put your shoulder to the wheel; push along,
Do your duty with a heart full of song,
We all have work; let no one shirk.
Put your shoulder to the wheel.

2. The Church has need of helping hands,
And hearts that know and feel.
The work to do is here for you;
Put your shoulder to the wheel.
Put your shoulder to the wheel; push along,
Do your duty with a heart full of song,
We all have work; let no one shirk.
Put your shoulder to the wheel.

3. Then don’t stand idly looking on;
The fight with sin is real.
It will be long but must go on;
Put your shoulder to the wheel.
Put your shoulder to the wheel; push along,
Do your duty with a heart full of song,
We all have work; let no one shirk.
Put your shoulder to the wheel.

4. Then work and watch and fight and pray
With all your might and zeal.
Push ev’ry worthy work along;
Put your shoulder to the wheel.
Put your shoulder to the wheel; push along,
Do your duty with a heart full of song,
We all have work; let no one shirk.
Put your shoulder to the wheel.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson by asking your children what makes them happy. You can just have them shout the ideas out loud or go around the room. If you’d like, write down their answers on a board or poster.

Read aloud: Jesus Christ wants us to find happiness. However, true happiness doesn’t always look the way we think it does. Let’s take Nephi and his family as an example. When they traveled in the wilderness and journeyed to the new land, they faced many challenges.

Ask: Do you remember some of the challenges Nephi and his family faced? [storm on the sea, Nephi breaking his bow, family fighting, etc.]

Note: If appropriate for your children, you can discuss that when Nephi wrote about finding happiness, he had just lost his father and left his brothers who hated him.

Read aloud: Even after going through so much, Nephi writes he and his family “lived after the manner of happiness” in the promised land. In our own lives, we face challenges.

Ask: What are some challenges you’re facing right now? [if it helps your children feel comfortable sharing, share one of your own challenges first]

Read aloud: Nephi teaches us that when we face challenges, we can still find happiness by working together and supporting one another. The people of Nephi kept the commandments of God and worked very hard.

Ask: What can we do to find happiness even when times are hard?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by having everyone skim through 2 Nephi 1, 4, and 5 and write down what challenges Nephi faced. If you’d like, you can have people work individually, in pairs, or small groups.

Read aloud: Once Nephi and his family arrived in the promised land, their trials did not stop. Their family continued to fight and the death of Lehi caused Nephi and the righteous members of his family to split away. However, Nephi writes that his people worked hard, followed God, built a temple, and began to prosper exceedingly, even living “after the manner of happiness.”

Ask: With this context in mind, what does it mean to you to “live after the manner of happiness”?

Share a personal experience where you were able to find joy because of Jesus Christ. Invite others to share as well.

Ask: What can we do to find more happiness when we struggle without dishonoring our feelings or pain?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read through 2 Nephi 4 and 5. Write down everything Nephi did as an individual and what his people did that may have contributed to them “living after the manner of happiness.” Contemplate your own life and how you can follow their examples. Try to set one goal for your week.
