Book of Mormon FHE Lesson – What is a Seer?

King Limhi rejoiced when Ammon taught him about seers. This Book of Mormon FHE lesson teaches what the role of a seer is and why they’re so important. It also helps teach how we can better follow the prophets in our day.

But a seer can know of things which are past, and also of things which are to come, and by them shall all things be revealed, or, rather, shall secret things be made manifest, and hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known shall be made known by them, and also things shall be made known by them which otherwise could not be known.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson with the following activity. Set up an obstacle course in an open space. Have the children attempt to complete the obstacle course with blindfolds on and no directions. Then, have someone who can see the obstacle course give directions to help them through it.

Read aloud: Today, we are going to be talking about seers. The Book of Mormon teaches us seers exist to help us.

Ask: Based on our activity, what do seers do?

Read aloud: In the Book of Mormon, a missionary named Ammon taught a king named Limhi about seers. He said seers make known things we couldn’t know without a seer. Seers bring hidden things to light. Seers know of the past and of the future.

Ask: Do we have seers today?

Read aloud: All of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the First Presidency are set apart as prophets, seers, and revelators. They are able to see more than we are. They can warn of danger to help us prepare for the future. They can help us understand the lessons of the past. If we listen to the prophets, we can rejoice exceedingly, just like King Limhi did when he learned about seers.

Ask: How can we follow the prophets?

If applicable, share any personal experiences where the words of the prophets helped illuminate, warn, or prepare. Finish with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by giving a basic overview of Ammon’s story and coming to King Limhi. Using chapter headings is a good resource for this review. Have someone read Mosiah 8:16-18. Before reading, ask everyone to pay attention to what a seer does.

And Ammon said that a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have, except he should possess the power of God, which no man can; yet a man may have great power given him from God.

But a seer can know of things which are past, and also of things which are to come, and by them shall all things be revealed, or, rather, shall secret things be made manifest, and hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known shall be made known by them, and also things shall be made known by them which otherwise could not be known.

Ask: What do these scriptures tell us about the role of a seer?

Read aloud: Today, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are called to be prophets, seers, and revelators. When we listen to their counsel and follow their teachings, we learn the will of God and come closer to Jesus Christ. We are warned, protected, and guided.

When King Limi heard Ammon’s testimony of seers, he “rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God.”

Ask: Why do you think King Limhi felt this way? Has there been a time in your life when you wanted to rejoice because we have prophets & seers today?

Read aloud: We can show our appreciation and gratitude for seers by following them. They speak for the Lord.

Ask: How can we better give heed the prophet’s counsel? What can we do if we don’t always understand or feel comfortable with the prophet’s teachings?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

Read through the section on Seers in the Bible Dictionary. Then, read Mosiah 8. As you read, note the different roles a seer has and think of one way it has blessed your life. Record your answers. If time permits, read through some of the most recent General Conference addresses and see what you can find that illustrate God working through seers today.

Rice Krispie Caramel Marshmallows

Ingredients: 

-1 can of sweetened condensed milk
-1 (11 oz.) bag of Kraft caramel bits
-2 tbsp. of butter
-1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract
-1 (16oz.) bag of large marshmallows
-7 cups of rice krispies
-wax paper
-toothpicks

Directions:

1. Place the rice Krispies in a shallow baking dish and set aside. Over medium-low heat, melt the butter, vanilla extract, sweetened condensed milk, and caramel bits together while stirring constantly until smooth and creamy.
2. Stick a toothpick into the top of the marshmallows. Carefully dip the marshmallow into the caramel. Hold the marshmallow above the pan to allow any excess caramel to drip of the marshmallow. Roll the marshmallow in the rice krispies until coated completely.
3. Place the marshmallow on the wax paper to cool. Repeat this process with the remaining marshmallows.
