Lesson
FOR CHILDREN
Begin the lesson by watching the following video about the story of Rebekah.
Read aloud: Because Rebekah was kind, she was ready for what the Lord wanted for her. When she married Isaac, the Lord’s covenant was renewed through their family. Just like Rebekah, we can be kind to others.
Ask: What does it mean to be kind?
Object lesson: Fill up a jug or container with water. We suggest using a rinsed-out milk jug with the lid tightly secured. See how many times each child can lift the heavy jug up and down.
Read aloud: Rebekah had to get water for ten camels from a deep well. It was hard work! Camels can drink gallons and gallons of water at a single time. Just like it was hard to lift our jug up and down, it can be hard to be kind sometimes. We have to work to be kind.
Share an experience where it was hard for you to be kind and why. Discuss situations the children have had when someone was kind to them. Finish with your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin the lesson by reading Genesis 24:10-26 together. Ask everyone to ponder as you read about what these verses tell us about the character and attributes of Rebekah. Discuss the answer to that question when you’ve finished reading.
Read aloud: We can learn from Rebekah how to be examples of Heavenly Father’s love towards others. On the day she met the servant of Abraham at the well, Rebekah was going about her day-to-day life. She wasn’t doing anything extraordinary. However, she had a chance to do something good, and even though it was hard, she was willing to act. Because of that, she was able to fulfill the greater destiny God had planned for her.
Ask: What does Rebekah’s story teach us about trying to do God’s will?
Share an experience when someone was kind to you and how it affected you. Invite others to do the same. Discuss how being kind helps us follow God’s plan for us.
FOR SINGLE STUDY
Read through Genesis 24 and make a list of what Rebekah did that prepared her for the life the Lord wanted for her and the character traits she had. Look over those attributes and pick one that you’d like to embody. Study that attribute in the scriptures and ponder on what you can do to incorporate that into your life in the upcoming week.
