Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – Surely the Lord Is in This Place

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

In his most desolate circumstances, Jacob still had life-changing revelatory experiences. This FHE lesson helps us understand how to recognize God is with us wherever we are.

Featued art by J. Ken Spencer

Genesis 28:16

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

Nearer, My God, to Thee | Hymn #100

1. Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me.
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

2. Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

3. There let the way appear,
Steps unto heav’n;
All that thou sendest me,
In mercy giv’n;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

Begin the lesson by watching the following video about ladders and taking small steps towards Christ.

Ask: What did you learn from this video?

Read aloud: There was a prophet named Jacob in the Bible who slept on a pile of stones. While sleeping on the uncomfortable rocks, he had a dream about a ladder to heaven.

Ask: Have you ever been on a ladder?

Read aloud: Sometimes going up a ladder can be hard or scary. We might be afraid of heights. However, Heavenly Father promises Jesus will be with us to help us and comfort us. When Jacob slept on a pile of rocks, he was in a hard place. He didn’t know if Heavenly Father would be there. Still, Heavenly Father gave Jacob a beautiful dream. When we are in hard places or situations, God will be with us too.

Ask: What are some of the small steps we can take towards Jesus Christ?

Finish the lesson by sharing any relevant personal experiences and your testimony.

Split into two groups. Have one group read through Genesis 28 and the other group read through Genesis 32. Ask them to specifically look for the circumstances surrounding the spiritual experiences Jacob had. Come back together and have each group summarize what they read.

Ask: What do these experiences teach us about receiving personal revelation for ourselves?

Read aloud: In a desolate place, Jacob received a life-changing dream. He said, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.” Do we believe that the Lord will be with us, even when we feel like we are in a wilderness?

Share a personal experience where you felt blessed or close to the Lord during a desolate or difficult time. Invite others to do the same.

Ask: Why is it hard to feel connected to God during tough times? How can we strengthen our connection to Him?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

Read through Genesis 28 and 32. Write down the circumstances Jacob faced when the Lord engaged with him. Journal about a time when the Lord reached out to you in a difficult circumstance. Ponder on ways the Lord might try to reach you even in your wilderness.
