Lesson
*For Younger Children* Read “A Dollar’s Worth” by Bruce Bash (Oct 1996 Friend). Discuss the importance of keeping the commandments. (You may want to use clipart to help tell the story or right click to open in a new window and print.)
*Discuss these questions as a family*
1- What did Kevin find?
2- What did he want to buy with a dollar?
3- Why was the little girl crying?
4- What did Kevin do with the dollar he found?
5- Should we steal or lie? Why?
Testify of the importance of keeping the commandments (be sure to also testify of how happy it makes Heavenly Father when we keep the commandments).
*For Teenagers or Adults* Read Exodus 20:1-17 & discuss the individual commandments. Use the drawings at the end to help you remember the 10 Commandments.
Read Exodus 20: 1-17 and pick out the 10 commandments.
1- Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind and strength
2- Thou shalt not worship false idols
3- Do not take the Lord’s name in vain
4- Keep the Sabbath day holy
5- Honor thy father & mother
6- Thou shalt not kill
7- Thou shalt not commit adultery
8- Thou shalt not steal
9- Thou shalt not bear false witness (thou shalt not lie)
10- Thou shalt not covet
Review the 10 Commandments in order. You may want to consider drawing pictures to represent each commandment, as follows: (to view an example: 10 Commandments)
1- The number one becomes a pedestal (No other Gods)
2- The number two becomes a person kneeling (Do not worship idols)
3- The number three becomes lips of a person speaking (Do not take the Lord’s name in vain)
4- The number four has a hole in the middle (Keep the Sabbath day “holy”)
5- The number five becomes a fathers face–the straight part on top of the 5 is the bottom of a hat and the curve part of the 5 forms the face (Honor thy father and mother)
6- The number six becomes a gun (Do not kill)
7- The number seven becomes an A or a VHS (Do not commit adultery)
8- The number eight becomes handcuffs (Do not steal)
9- The number nine becomes Pinocchio or a bear’s head (Do not bear false witness–do not lie)
10- The number ten becomes a stick figure and a larger person (Do not covet)

Sweet Sandals or Summer Berry Trifle
Sweet Sandals
Ingredients:
Oval-shaped cookies
(such as Nabisco Cameos and Pepperidge Farm Milanos)
Frosting
Sour gummy worms
Rope licorice
Gummy candy
Instructions:
1-To make a pair, frost two oval-shaped cookies or use a toothpick to dab frosting on each cookie where the straps will be attached.
2- For wide straps, snip the rounded ends from a sour gummy worm, cut it in half, and slice each half lengthwise, leaving one end intact. For thin straps, cut rope licorice into four 1-3/4 pieces, cut one end of each piece on an angle, and pinch together the pointed ends to form two pairs.
3- Press the straps, connected ends first, into the frosting. Use more frosting to add gummy candy jewels. Let the cookies set for 20 minutes. Serve them on a dish towel spread on a beach of graham cracker crumbs.
Summer Berry Trifle
Ingredients:
1 package (3.4-ounce) instant vanilla pudding
4 cups fresh berries
(strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries)
–washed and hulled, plus extra for garnish
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 cup whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
24 to 36 ladyfingers
Instructions:
1- To make the fillings, prepare the pudding according to the package directions and chill it.
2- Slice the strawberries, if you’re using them, then toss all of the berries with the lemon juice and the 1/4 cup of sugar. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the berries to release their juices.
3- In a medium mixing bowl, whip the cream, vanilla extract, and remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar until soft peaks form. Set aside.
4- To make the layers, set a layer of ladyfingers (around 7 or 8 ) on the bottom of a large, clear serving bowl (ours was 4 quarts). Top with the berries with half of the pudding.
5- Add another layer of ladyfingers, another third of the berries and juice, and the rest of the pudding. Add a final layer of ladyfingers and berries. Top with the whipped cream and a berry garnish.
6- Refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. Serves 8 to 10.

Thank you for the lesson…just tweaked a little bit when it came to the ACTIVITY and TREAT sections.
Made COMMANDMENT COOKIES (labeled ten cookies numerically (ten commandments…1, 2, 3, etc.) For each cookie my children took, I would ask them if they knew the commandment to the number on the cookie.
Overall, FHE was a SUCCESS!!! Again, thank you!
