FHE Lesson Hymn

I’ll Walk with You- Primary Song 140 or Have I Done Any Good? Hymn 223

I’ll Walk with You

1. If you don’t walk as most people do,
Some people walk away from you,
But I won’t! I won’t!
If you don’t talk as most people do,
Some people talk and laugh at you,
But I won’t! I won’t!
I’ll walk with you. I’ll talk with you.
That’s how I’ll show my love for you.
Jesus walked away from none.
He gave his love to ev’ryone.
So I will! I will!
Jesus blessed all he could see,
Then turned and said, “Come, follow me.”
And I will! I will!
I will! I will!
I’ll walk with you. I’ll talk with you.
That’s how I’ll show my love for you.

Have I Done Any Good?

1. Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone’s burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?

Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.

2. There are chances for work all around just now,
Opportunities right in our way.
Do not let them pass by, saying, “Sometime I’ll try,”
But go and do something today.
’Tis noble of man to work and to give;
Love’s labor has merit alone.
Only he who does something helps others to live.
To God each good work will be known.

FHE Lesson

*For Younger Children* Tell the story of the Good Samaritan. Have the children act out the story as you tell it. Discuss the following questions and testify of the importance of being compassionate.

Tell the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 29-37)– have the children act out the story.

Discuss the following questions as a family:

1- What did the thieves do to the man?
2- Did the priest help the man?
3- Did the Levite help the man?
4- Did the Samaritan help the man?
5- How did the Samaritan help the man? What did he do?

Explain that the Samaritan had compassion. Testify of the importance of having compassion.

*For Teenagers or Adults* Discuss the meaning of compassion. Tell the miracle of the 5 loaves of bread and the fishes. Also tell the story of the Good Samaritan. Set goals towards being more compassionate this week.

Start by asking the question: What is compassion?

After family members have answered the question. Begin telling the story of Jesus feeding thousands with 7 loaves of bread and a few fish.

Why did Jesus feed the people?

Jesus was compassionate. He wanted to help others.

In what other ways did Jesus show compassion for others?

Jesus was a great example of compassion. He also gave a parable of a man who showed compassion on another. Tell the story of the Good Samaritan. Apply the story of the Good Samaritan to us. There are people all around us that we can show compassion. Think of someone you can show a little more compassion. Set a goal to be more compassionate this week.

Testify of the importance of compassion and the blessings we can receive from being compassionate (ie. increased love for others).

FHE Treat

Popcorn Squares or Dessert Nachos

Popcorn Squares

1/2 cup honey
2/3 cup peanut butter
1 cup granola cereal, with larger chunks broken up
1 cup roasted and salted peanuts, coarsely chopped
3 cups plain popped popcorn

1- Line an 8- or 9-inch square pan with foil. Heat the honey in a large saucepan until it boils, about 2 minutes. Add the peanut butter and stir until mixture is well blended.

2- Remove the pan from the stove and stir in the granola, the peanuts, and the popcorn until everything is coated.

3- Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Refrigerate the pan until the mixture is cool, about 30 minutes.

4- Cut the mixture into small squares (we got 25 from our pan). The treats will be a bit crumbly, so you may want to serve them in paper candy cups.

Desert Nachos

3 6-inch flour tortillas
Cooking spray
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, cleaned and hulled
1 tablespoon orange juice
8 ounces vanilla yogurt
1 cup chopped strawberries
1/2 cup shredded coconut or white chocolate shavings

1- To make the tortilla chips, heat the oven to 350º. Cut the tortillas into triangles, lay them on a baking sheet, and spritz them with cooking spray.

2- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar over the tops of the tortillas and bake for 12 minutes or until crisp.

3- For homemade strawberry sauce, combine the strawberries, orange juice, and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon sugar in a blender. Puree the ingredients until smooth.

4- Once the chips have cooled, set them on a plate. To complete the buffet, set out separate bowls containing the strawberry sauce, yogurt, chopped strawberries, and coconut or chocolate shavings. Serves 4 to 6.
