Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?

Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?

*For Children*

Read aloud: Have you ever had a friend who scraped their knee or got hurt? Have you ever seen someone being made fun of at school? Maybe you’ve seen someone cry when they were really sad? When these things happen, we often feel something inside of us that can make us sad too. We have feelings that make us want to help this person. This feeling is compassion. It is knowing that someone needs help and wanting to help them in any way you can.

Ask: Who are some people you can think of that have compassion?

Read aloud: Jesus Christ is the greatest example of compassion. He feed people, healed them, and listened to them. Even when he had to be firm and stand against people who were doing wrong, he did all he could to invite others to follow him. Christ has commanded us to develop compassion.

Invite your family to pretend to be Phillip as you read the following story:

Phillip was a thirteen-year-old boy with a mental handicap whose ward boundaries were changed. Most of his friends stayed in his old ward, but his family went to the new ward. His mother was concerned about how well Phillip would be accepted.

On his first Sunday in the new ward, Phillip entered his new class. From the back of the room came a question.

“Hey, who’s the guy with the thick glasses and the weird eyes?”

Phillip had a breathing problem which meant that he often had to stick out his tongue out in order to get enough air. Seeing Phillip, one of the boys in the class turned to his friend, stuck out his tongue, and said, “Look guys! Guess who I am.”

Later that day at home, Phillip told his mother that he did not want to to go to church.

Pause the story and ask: How would you feel if you were Phillip? If you were in this class, what would you have done?

Continue reading: Phillip’s mother decided to ask to speak to the class next Sunday, without Phillip being present. The teacher allowed Phillip’s mother to explain: “When Phillip was born, the doctors did not think he would live. He was born with an imperfect body that does not allow him to do as much as some of you are able to do. He may not look like you, but he has the same kind of feelings you do. He feels alone. He is a little afraid to be here because he thinks he does not have any friends. I am concerned that without your help, he will never feel like he belongs.”

During the next few weeks there was a decided change in the attitude and actions of the class.

Ask: Have you ever felt compassion for someone? When has someone showed compassion to you?

Finish the lesson by telling about times when someone treated you with compassion and bearing your testimony.


*For Teenagers and Adults*

Begin by watching the following video. Ask your family or group to look for some of the challenges and the joys that come when developing compassion.

Ask: What did this video teach you about compassion?

Read aloud: As children of God, we are born with feelings of compassion. Developing these feelings of compassion is an important part of our process in becoming fit for the kingdom of God. However, it is not always an easy process. Sometimes, it is hard to feel compassion, especially when others are not compassionate towards you. We must also find a balance between being compassionate and standing for our beliefs when others mock or ridicule them. In all things, Christ is an example of how to express compassion to others.

Invite everyone to go to the scriptures to find an example of Christ’s compassion. Give them a few minutes to search and ponder. Come back together as a group and share your findings.

Ask: How do we become compassionate? What are some struggles we face in developing compassion and how can we overcome them?

Finish the lesson by discussing how you can develop compassion for others and by bearing your testimony.

Peanut Butter Cheerio Bars or Cinnamon Oat Baked Apples


Peanut  Butter Cheerio Bars


-3/4 cup peanut butter
-1/2 cup honey
-3 cups Cheerios


Line 8×8″ pan with aluminum foil. Set aside. Cook peanut butter and honey over medium heat stirring constantly until completely melted and blended.
Remove from heat and stir in cereal. Mix until evenly coated. Place mixture in prepared pan and press in place. Refrigerate for 1 hour before cutting into bars. Store any remaining in refrigerator.

Cinnamon Oat Baked Apples


-4 gala apples
-1/2 cup oats
-1/3 cup pecans (optional)
-3 tbsp brown sugar
-1 1/2 tbsp greek yogurt
-1 tbsp butter, melted
-1 tsp cinnamon
-3 tbs apple juice
-Whipped cream

1. Preheat oven to 350. Combine oats and pecans with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Spread out on a baking sheet in a thin layer and bake for 4-6 minutes until golden and toasted. Remove and set aside. Reduce oven temp to 325.

2. Rinse and core the apples, but make sure not to cut through the bottom of the apple. You can use an apple corer or a paring knife. Make sure seeds are removed as well (scoop out with spoon)

3. In a bowl combine oat-pecan mixture with brown sugar, yogurt , melted butter and cinnamon. Spoon mixture into the cavity of each apple. Place apples in an 8X8 inch baking dish. Pour apple juice in the bottom of dish.

4. Bake at 325 for 30-40 minutes until tender (not mushy). Top with whipped cream or ice cream and serve.

Service Project

Find a service project you can do together as a family. Consider visiting an elderly person in the ward, inviting a new family over for a game night, writing letters to missionaries, cleaning up an outdoor area (such as a park), making a craft or kit to give to an organization, or gather items to donate. Help the whole family feel that the service project is their project. Let each person contribute ideas and help make final plans.

    • It is free online! There is no place to buy it on DVD, however. But you should be able to pull it up on YouTube or Mormon Channel during a lesson.
