Hymn

Where Can I Turn for Peace? | Hymn #129

1. Where can I turn for peace?
Where is my solace
When other sources cease to make me whole?
When with a wounded heart, anger, or malice,
I draw myself apart,
Searching my soul?

2. Where, when my aching grows,
Where, when I languish,
Where, in my need to know, where can I run?
Where is the quiet hand to calm my anguish?
Who, who can understand?
He, only One.

3. He answers privately,
Reaches my reaching
In my Gethsemane, Savior and Friend.
Gentle the peace he finds for my beseeching.
Constant he is and kind,
Love without end.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson by holding up a picture of a lawyer like the one below. Explain that when someone is accused of doing something wrong and they go to court, a lawyer defends them. They plead their case before the judge.

What Role Does a Defense Lawyer Play in a Criminal Case?

Ask: How would you feel to have someone help you when you’ve done something wrong?

Read aloud: We are children of Heavenly Parents. They love us and want us to grow and learn here on Earth. They know we’ll make mistakes and sin. They’ve given us someone to help us and to plead our case.

Ask: Who is the person they’ve given us?

Read aloud: Jesus Christ is our advocate. He loves us and knows everything about what we’re going through. He stands up for us and pleads our case. Through Him, we can be forgiven of everything we’ve done wrong.

Ask: How does it feel to know Jesus Christ is on your side?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Ask everyone to think about what it means that Jesus Christ is their advocate.

Read aloud: One of the roles of Jesus Christ is as our advocate. An advocate is someone who supports or recommends someone. As someone who knows us intimately and has suffered for our sins, Jesus Christ can stand before our Heavenly Parents and plead our case.

Read through Doctrine and Covenants 45:1-5.

Ask: What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ is your advocate?

Read aloud: Sometimes, we think of Christ only being able to advocate for us in the future, when it comes to our final judgments before God. However, our daily lives change when we realize Christ is constantly pleading on our behalf. We can act with more confidence and more peace. There is nothing in our lives He can’t make right or help us through. We should strive to think of Christ in this role every day.

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read through Doctrine and Covenants 45:1-5. Then, go to the Topical Guide and read scriptures under “Jesus Christ, Advocate.” Write down what it means for Christ to be your advocate.

FHE Game / Activity

Activity

Who Is It?

To play this game, blindfold someone and have them stand in the middle of a circle. On the word “Go,” they must reach out and try to touch someone. When they touch someone, they must ask, “Who is it?” The person must reply by saying “It is I” in as funny and as weird a voice as possible. If the person in the middle guesses correctly, the person they nabbed is it. If not, they continue on until they guess someone correctly.
