It isn’t always easy to share and defend our beliefs. This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson helps us trust the Lord and find courage as we seek to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others.

Doctrine and Covenants 71:9-10

Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you—there is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson by showing a picture of Samuel the Lamanite standing on the city wall. Ask the children what they know about the story.

Read aloud: Samuel had a message to share from Heavenly Father. None of the weapons the wicked people hurled hit him. He was protected. When Joseph Smith was a prophet, he was called to share the gospel with others. Many people didn’t like what he had to say.

Ask: Have you ever felt scared about sharing the gospel with others?

Share a personal experience when you felt nervous about talking to someone about the gospel and what happened.

Read aloud: The Lord revealed to Joseph Smith and other early missionaries that He would help them when they shared the gospel. He said, “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper.” They would be protected and given power. That promise applies to us today. Things won’t always work out perfectly, but we can trust in the Lord.

Ask: What is one thing you love about the gospel that you want to share?

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Ask everyone to think about what Samantha did that was effective and what wasn’t.

Read aloud: As Joseph Smith and the early Saints tried to share the gospel with others, they were met with opposition. In many cases, they faced situations that were frightening or even dangerous. The Lord assured them and promised them that “no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper.” Today, we have been promised the strength and power to share and defend our beliefs, even if things don’t work out the way we want them to.

Ask: How can we gain the courage to share and defend our beliefs?

Treat

Watermelon Lime Sorbet

Ingredients: 

5 heaping cups cubed watermelon (about 750 grams)
3 tablespoons lime juice
pinch of sea salt (optional)

Directions:

1. Place cubed watermelon on a parchment-lined baking sheet or plastic cutting board and freeze for 5 hours, or until frozen.
2. Place lime juice, frozen watermelon*, and sea salt (if using) in a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend until watermelon is broken down into shaved ice type consistency.
3. Enjoy!
