As the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ rolled forth in the latter-days, many witnesses were called to testify of the truthfulness of God’s unfolding work. This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson teaches us how we can stand as witnesses today.
Scripture
And after that you have obtained faith, and have seen them with your eyes, you shall
of them, by the power of God.Hymn
1. The witness of the Holy Ghost,
As borne by those who know,
Has lifted me again to thee,
O Father of my soul.
2. I know that thou art in the heav’n.
I know the Savior reigns.
I know a prophet speaks to us
For our eternal gain.
3. My eyes are wet; my heart is full.
The Spirit speaks today.
O Lord, wilt thou my life renew
And in my bosom stay.
4. As testimony fills my heart,
It dulls the pain of days.
For one brief moment, heaven’s view
Appears before my gaze.
Lesson
FOR CHILDREN
Begin with the following activity. Think of a few silly things you could do while the children have their eyes closed. This could be doing a silly dance, releasing streamers, turning a chair upside down, or drawing a mustache on an adult’s face. You’ll want at least three things to do. Instruct the children to close their eyes. Then tell them that if they feel a tap on their shoulder to open their eyes. They will be witnesses. You can have as many witnesses as you’d like.
When the children close their eyes, enact your plan. Make sure the witnesses are watching. Then, have everyone open their eyes to see what silly things have happened. Ask the children what they think happened and who did what. Then have the witnesses tell the truth about what they saw. Gather together and sit down.
Ask: Why did you believe the witnesses when they told you what happened?
Read aloud: God calls witnesses today to testify of truths. When Joseph Smith was the prophet, He called men to see the gold plates in person so they could tell other people they were real. No matter what people said or did to them, these witnesses remained true to what they saw.
We can be like these witnesses by standing up for what we believe and know to be true.
Ask: What are some gospel truths?
Finish the lesson by sharing a personal experience where you stood up for what a gospel truth. Close with your testimony.
FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Ask everyone to think about what this video teaches us about witnesses.
Read aloud: As the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ rolled forth in the latter-days, many witnesses were called to testify of the truthfulness of God’s unfolding work. The Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon, as shown in the video, faced many challenges but never denied what they saw. While we may not have the same angelic experiences they did, we can stand as witnesses for God today.
Read Doctrine and Covenants 17 out loud together, including the subheading. Ask everyone to look for some of the conditions the Lord asks of His witnesses.
Ask: What are some of the things the Lord asked of those who wanted to be witnesses to His work? What are some ways we can be witnesses today?
Share a personal experience where you stood up for something you believed in. Invite others to do the same. Close with your testimony.
FOR SINGLE STUDY
