Doctrine and Covenants FHE Lesson – That Which is of God Is Light

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

That which is of God is light! This Doctrine and Covenants FHE lesson focuses on understanding how Christ is light and how we can make that light brighter.

Doctrine and Covenants 50:24

That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.

Shine On | Children’s Songbook, pg. 144

1. My light is but a little one,
My light of faith and prayer;
But lo! it glows like God’s great sun,
For it was lighted there.

Shine on, shine on, shine on bright and clear;
Shine on, shine on now the day is here.

2. I may not hide my little light;
The Lord has told me so.
’Tis given me to keep in sight,
That all may see it glow.

Start with the following activity! You’ll need candles or small lights. Go into the darkest room of your home and try to eliminate as much light as possible. Once everyone is in the dark, ask them what they can see. Then, light a single candle or turn on a small, hand-held light. Ask the question again. Light each candle, and continue asking the question. When all the candles have been lit, turn on the lights and gather for the lesson.

Read aloud: Joseph Smith learned through revelation that God is light and we should try to grow our lights so they get brighter and brighter. Just as more light helped us see the room more clearly, more of God’s light will help us see life more clearly.

Ask: What are some things you’d like to understand?

Read aloud: When we have God’s light, we can better understand who He is. We can know why we are on Earth and the choices we need to make. We can have comfort and peace.

Ask: What are some ways we can make our lights brighter?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

Begin the lesson by asking why light is important in our lives. Make a list together. Then go through your list and ask how it relates to Jesus Christ. Discuss.

Read aloud: The scriptures often compare Christ and Christ-like things to light. Doctrine and Covenants 50:24 teaches us that God is light and as we get closer to Him, we will receive more light.

Ask: What does receiving light from God mean to you?

Read aloud: Our Heavenly Parents have asked us to seek after light. We can grow our lights brighter and brighter by following God, seeking His will, and doing our best to act upon the guidance of the Spirit.

Share a personal experience where you felt you made your light brighter. Ask others to share as well. Finish with your testimony.

Search through the Topical Guide scriptures on Light. Ponder on what these scriptures mean to you and ponder on how you can grow the light of Christ in your life.

Flashlight Firefly

This is a fun version of Hide and Seek! Pick someone to be the “firefly”, give them a flashlight, and have them go hide while everyone closes their eyes. Turn off the lights and go look! Whenever someone yells firefly, the person hiding has to flash the flashlight briefly. The first person to capture the firefly wins!
