Doctrine and Covenants FHE Lesson – The Voice of My Servants

- Advertisment - LDS Bookstore Jewelry

The first section of the Doctrine and Covenants reminds us that prophets have the power and authority to speak for God. This FHE lesson on prophets helps us better understand what prophets do and how we can hearken to their words.

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 1:38

What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Hymn

We Listen to a Prophet’s Voice | Hymn #22

1. We listen to a prophet’s voice and hear the Savior too.
With love he bids us do the work the Lord would have us do.
The Savior calls his chosen seer to preach the word of God,
That men might learn to find the path marked by the iron rod.

2. In ev’ry land, in ev’ry tongue, our prophet will be heard;
How swiftly round the world his voice reveals the gospel word!
The sacred message that he brings will witness and agree
With ev’ry prophet called of God throughout earth’s history.

3. Hosanna! Let our praise ascend unto the Savior’s throne;
Rejoice! The prophet has confirmed that by Him we are known.
Attend, ye earth! The prophet speaks; come listen and obey.
He is the man who holds the keys of priesthood pow’r today.

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson by presenting boxes or containers that are covered so no one can see inside of them. In one box, place small treats or candies. Leave the other empty. Tell the children one box has treats and the other doesn’t. Have them all raise their hands to indicate which box they want to pick. Then, have one child come up and look into both boxes. No one else should be able to see inside. Repeat the activity and ask the children which box they would pick. Ideally, the rest of the children will look to the child who has seen inside the box to pick the correct one. Share the treats.

Read aloud: The treats inside these boxes represent the things our Heavenly Parents wants to reveal to us. They could be warnings or promises or things we need to learn. Prophets represent one of you seeing inside the boxes. Our Heavenly Parents speak to a prophet who in turn speaks to us. We receive blessings when we follow the prophet.

Ask: What are some of the blessings we receive from following the prophet?

Read the following portion of Doctrine and Covenants 1:38 out loud. Ask the children to listen for the word that describes the difference between His voice and the voice of His servants. My word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Ask: Did the Lord say there is a difference between His voice and the voice of His servants?

Read aloud: The Lord says that whether He is speaking to us directly or if He is speaking through prophets, it’s the same. This shows us how important the words of the prophets are.

If time permits, finish the lesson by discussing the current prophet and what the children know about him. Close with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Before pressing play, ask everyone to think about what this video teaches them about prophets.

Ask: What does this video teach us about prophets?

Read aloud: The pattern of prophets is evidence of our Heavenly Parent’s deep love for us. We can receive warnings, promises, and teachings for our time. However, in a word full of noise, it can be difficult to embrace what the prophets teach us.

Ask: Why is it sometimes difficult to follow the prophet? How can we strengthen our resolve to do so?

Have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 1:38 out loud. What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Read aloud: What does this verse teach us about God’s word?

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.
