Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 70 (Section Heading)

The great importance of the revelations that would later be published as the Book of Commandments and then the Doctrine and Covenants was considered. This revelation was given after the conference voted that the revelations were “worth to the Church the riches of the whole Earth.”

Hymn

Search, Ponder, and Pray | Children’s Songbook, pg. 109

1. I love to read the holy scriptures,
And, ev’ry time I do,
I feel the Spirit start to grow within my heart-
A testimony that they’re true.

[Chorus]

Search, ponder, and pray
Are the things that I must do.
The Spirit will guide, and, deep inside,
I’ll know the scriptures are true.

2. So, prayerfully I’ll read the scriptures
Each day my whole life through.
I’ll come to understand.
I’ll heed the Lord’s command
And live as he would have me do.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson by having the children go on a treasure hunt for small treats, such as lollipops or hard candies. Once they’ve gathered them up, begin the lesson by holding up a set of scriptures.

Read aloud: Unlike the treats we found, we don’t have to go hunting for the treasures Heavenly Father has given us. The Lord taught us that the scriptures are worth the riches of the whole earth. They are more important than any treasure we could find.

Ask: Do you know what a revelation is?

Read aloud: A revelation is divine communication with God. We can get revelation when we pray about our lives. Prophets and apostles can also get revelation for the Church. When Joseph Smith was a prophet, he wrote many of his revelations down. Because there was only one copy, no one could read them. They decided to gather the revelations together in a book. Today, we know this book as the Doctrine and Covenants.

Ask: What are some of the things you’ve learned from the Doctrine and Covenants?

Read aloud: We should study the scriptures so we can learn more about Jesus Christ. They are precious and important.

Ask: Why are the scriptures important to you?

Finish the lesson with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by having everyone find one of their favorite verses of scripture. Go around, read the verses, and have them explain why they like it.

Read aloud: In the Doctrine and Covenants, we learn that the revelations of God are worth more than the riches of the whole earth. Joseph Smith and other church leaders worked hard to ensure the revelations they received were written down, printed, and shared. This process continues today.

Have someone read the following quote from the Bible Dictionary: “Divine revelation is one of the grandest concepts and principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for without it, man could not know of the things of God and could not be saved with any degree of salvation in the eternities.”

Ask: Why are the scriptures so important? Why is it hard sometimes to treasure up the scriptures the way we’ve been invited to?

Read aloud: The inspired words of the Lord’s servants are the Lord’s words. The words in the Doctrine and Covenants are beautiful because they represent the power of revelation brought back to the earth. That power continues today as we listen to the words of modern-day prophets. We can work with the Lord to overcome the things that hold us back from treasuring His word.

Ask: How has the principle of revelation through prophets blessed your life?

Finish by sharing personal experiences and close with your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read An Ensign to the Nations by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Ponder on how you can treasure the words of modern-day prophets in your own life.

Book of Mormon Reading Race

Have everyone get a copy of the Book of Mormon. Choose one person to start with. The person who is chosen to be it opens up to a random spot in the Book of Mormon and begins reading. The first person to then find where they are reading and begin reading along gets a point. The next person then opens up and starts it over. Play as long as you’d like or until everyone has had the chance to go three times.
