FHE Scripture

Elder L. Tom Perry –  October Conference 2013

“Each article of faith adds unique value to our understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

FHE Lesson Hymn

Praise to the Man – Hymn #27

1. Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah!
Jesus anointed that Prophet and Seer.
Blessed to open the last dispensation,
Kings shall extol him, and nations revere.

Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven!
Traitors and tyrants now fight him in vain.
Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren;
Death cannot conquer the hero again.

2. Praise to his mem’ry, he died as a martyr;
Honored and blest be his ever great name!
Long shall his blood, which was shed by assassins,
Plead unto heav’n while the earth lauds his fame.

3. Great is his glory and endless his priesthood.
Ever and ever the keys he will hold.
Faithful and true, he will enter his kingdom,
Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.

4. Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven;
Earth must atone for the blood of that man.
Wake up the world for the conflict of justice.
Millions shall know “Brother Joseph” again.

*For Younger Children* Read or summarize “All Because a Child Knew the Articles of Faith”  (June 2011 Friend). Discuss the importance of the Articles of Faith in your lives. In what ways does your family live the articles of faith, can all of you recite them?

Forty-five years ago I worked with a man named Sharman Hummel in the printing business. I once asked him how he came to receive his testimony of the gospel.

He responded, “We lived in the East. I was journeying by bus to San Francisco. In Salt Lake City a young girl entered the bus—a Primary girl—who sat next to me. She was going to Reno, Nevada, for a visit with her aunt. As we journeyed westward, I noticed a billboard: ‘Visit the Mormon Sunday School this week.’13-articles-of-faith-girl-poster

“I said to the little girl, ‘I guess there are a lot of Mormons in Utah, aren’t there?’

“She replied, ‘Yes, sir.’

“Then I said to her, ‘Are you a Mormon?’

“Again her reply: ‘Yes, sir.’”

Sharman Hummel then asked, “What do Mormons believe?” And that little girl recited the first article of faith; then she talked about it. Continuing, she gave him the second article of faith and talked about it. Then she gave him the third and the fourth and the fifth and the sixth and all of theArticles of Faith and talked about all of them.

Sharman Hummel said, “I was profoundly impressed. When I arrived in San Francisco, the very first thing I did was to look through the yellow pages for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I called the mission president, and he sent two missionaries to where I was staying. I became a member of the Church, my wife became a member, all of our children became members.”

The entire Hummel family remained active in the Church. Each of the daughters has been to the temple. Countless are those who have been brought to a knowledge of the gospel by the members of this family—all because a young child had been taught the Articles of Faith and had the ability and the courage to proclaim the truth.

How President Monson Learned the Articles of Faith

“An inspired teacher in my life was Erma Bollwinkel. She constantly stressed the importance of learning the Articles of Faith. In fact, we could not graduate from Primary until we successfully recited each article of faith to her—something of a challenge for rambunctious young boys, but we persevered and succeeded. I have, throughout my life, as a result, been able to recite the Articles of Faith.”

Rambunctious means active and noisy.

Persevere means to keep trying.

Read from or summarize  “Using The Articles of Faith” by  (Jan 1995 Ensign). Discuss the importance of the Articles of Faith in your lives. In what ways does your family live the articles of faith, can all of you recite them?

A taxicab driver in Washington, D.C., displayed a picture of his two children on the sun visor in front of him. “They are beautiful children,” I said. “You must love them very much to carry their photos in your cab. I have children, too, and grandchildren, and I miss them when I’m away from them.”articles-of-faith-page

“Why are you away?”

“I’m here for Church meetings. Are you a religious man?”

“Yes, ma’am. I am a Christian.”

“So am I! That’s wonderful!” I said. “You and I are alike in two ways—we both love our children, and we both are Christian.”

“Ma’am, do you believe in the Holy Spirit?” he asked.

“I do. I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

He looked puzzled.

“Have you heard of the Mormons?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“That’s another name for our Church,” I explained. “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.”

That started a discussion based on the first five articles of faith. The fifth article of faith led to our talking about the authority and power to seal families forever. This interested him—he had seen the beautiful Washington Temple.

I asked him if he’d like to know more. He said that he would, and he agreed to listen to the missionaries. I had him write his name and address for me, and as soon as I reached my hotel, I telephoned the mission office and gave his name to the elder who answered.

The Articles of Faith are a good way for us to share the gospel. While they don’t tell all of our beliefs, they were written by a prophet of God, Joseph Smith, and they are scripture. They have stood the test of time as a way to help us understand and tell others what we believe. But learning theArticles of Faith is only worthwhile to us as we let them be part of our lives. They are words and beliefs to plant firmly in our hearts and minds and actions.

Grape-cicles & Glazed Donut Holes

  1. Red and Green Grapes (9 per skewer)
  2. Thin wooden skewers

  1. Skewer 9 grapes onto each stick, alternating colors and making sure the top grape covers the pointy end of the skewer.
  2. Lay them flat in tupperware, placing a layer of foil (or wax paper) in between each layer of grape skewers, and put them in the freezer for at least 3 hours.

Glazed Donut Holes

  1. 1 Can Refrigerated Biscuits
  2. Vegetable Oil
  3. Glaze:
  4. 1½ Cup Powdered Sugar, Sifted
  5. 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  6. 2-3 Tbsp Water or Milk

  1. Mix all ingredients for glaze until combined and smooth.
  2. Pour vegetable oil into a sauce pan, about 1 inch worth. Turn stove on to medium or medium/low heat.
  3. Cut biscuits into quarters (I like to cut them into sixths to make them easier for little hands) and roll each piece into a ball.
  4. Drop biscuit balls carefully into the hot oil a few at a time. Let them lightly brown and then turn them over, about 15-20 seconds. If they brown too dark too fast, turn your burner down…too slow, turn the burner up.
  5. Once donuts are browned on both sides, remove them from the oil and let them set on a paper towel to drain the oil.
  6. When all donuts are out of the oil, start dipping each donut into the glaze and place them on a plate.

FHE Game / Activity

Fun with the Articles of Faith (Jan 2008 Ensign)

Many of us are trying to help our families or Primary classes learn theArticles of Faith. So why not make a game of it? First, memorize the following key words for each article of faith: (1) Godhead, (2) Adam, (3) Atonement, (4) first principles, (5) hands, (6) organization, (7) gifts, (8) word of God, (9) revelation, (10) ten tribes, (11) worshipping, (12) law, (13) praiseworthy (see the Primary 5 manual). Then you’re ready to play the following games:

• Musical articles. Write each key word on a different large square of colored paper. Place the squares on the floor. Play some music and have the children move clockwise from square to square. When the music stops, the players who can say the article of faith indicated on their square are invited to do so. Repeat the game several times so the children can practice several articles of faith.

• Brainteaser. Have one person face the group and draw a key word from a sack. Without looking at the word, the person sticks it on his or her forehead with a bit of tape. The group then gives hints or repeats the matching article of faith, without saying the key word. If someone says the word before the person with the word on his or her forehead guesses it, that person must place the next key word on his or her forehead.

• Make a match. Write each key word and the numbers 1–13 on separate squares of paper. Turn the papers face down. One at a time, the players turn over two squares of paper until they find the matches.
