FHE Lesson on Service – When I Serve God, I Serve Others

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

King Benjamin taught that when we are in the service of our fellow beings, we are in the service of God. This FHE lesson on service helps us better understand how we can better serve God, why it is important, and how service can change our hearts.

Scripture

Mosiah 2:17

And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

Hymn

Lord, I Would Follow Thee | Hymn #220

1. Savior, may I learn to love thee,
Walk the path that thou hast shown,
Pause to help and lift another,
Finding strength beyond my own.
Savior, may I learn to love thee—
Lord, I would follow thee.

2. Who am I to judge another
When I walk imperfectly?
In the quiet heart is hidden
Sorrow that the eye can’t see.
Who am I to judge another?
Lord, I would follow thee.

3. I would be my brother’s keeper;
I would learn the healer’s art.
To the wounded and the weary
I would show a gentle heart.
I would be my brother’s keeper—
Lord, I would follow thee.

4. Savior, may I love my brother
As I know thou lovest me,
Find in thee my strength, my beacon,
For thy servant I would be.
Savior, may I love my brother—
Lord, I would follow thee.

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Begin the lesson with the following activity. Prepare a simple task for someone to complete, such as moving towels from one basket to another. Give them one minute to do so. However, have them do it without using their hands, keeping their arms crossed behind their back.

Then, repeat the activity again with someone standing behind them and placing their arms through. They will act as the person’s hands. See how much more of the task can be completed. Sit down to begin the lesson.

Ask: What does this activity teach us about service?

Read aloud: When King Benjamin stood on the tower, one of the things he preached about was loving others through service. There are many people around us every day who need help. By acting as Christ’s hands, we can do as He would if He were here.

King Benjamin taught, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”

This means when we serve others, we serve God.

Ask: Why does God want us to serve?

Read aloud: God wants all of His children to come home to Him. That makes Him so happy. We show our love to God when we serve and help His work.

Ask: How do you feel when you serve?

Finish the lesson with any relevant personal experiences and your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Begin the lesson by watching the following video. Before pressing play, ask everyone to think about what it means to serve God through serving others.

Read aloud: King Benjamin taught, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Christ himself said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Ask: How do we serve God when serving others? Why do we become closer to God through service?

Read aloud: We serve God by doing as He would if He were here. God has great love for all of His children and has given us the opportunity to work alongside Him. Not only do we help others along the covenant path, but we also fulfill His work by better taking on God’s divine nature.

Share a personal experience when service brought you closer to God and why. Ask others to share their experiences as well.

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Watch the video in the activity section below. Note the things King Benjamin teaches about service and how his actions reflect his teachings. Then, ponder on one act of service you’d like to give this week.
