FHE Scripture

Scripture

D&C 45:71

71 – And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy.

1. If on occasion you have found
Your language is in question,
Or ugly thoughts come to your mind,
Then here’s a good suggestion.

Just hum your favorite hymn,
Sing out with vigor and vim,
And you will find it clears your mind.
Hum your favorite hymn.

2. Before you say an angry word,
Remember you’ll regret it,
For once it’s said the harm is done,
And some folks won’t forget it.

Praise to the Lord the Almighty1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
Join the great throng,
Psaltery, organ and song,
Sounding in glad adoration!

2. Praise to the Lord! Over all things he gloriously reigneth.
Borne as on eagle wings, safely his Saints he sustaineth.
Hast thou not seen
How all thou needest hath been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

3. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy way and defend thee.
Surely his goodness and mercy shall ever attend thee.
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
Who with his love doth befriend thee.

4. Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath breath, join with Abraham’s seed to adore him!
Let the “amen”
Sum all our praises again,
Now as we worship before him.

Lesson

*For Younger Children*  Sing and Dance to favorite songs. Discuss the power of music. Watch/Listen to “I Am a Child of God” by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Testify of the power of uplifting music.

Sing and Dance to favorite songs.

Play, sing, or have family members name several of their favorite songs. These may range from hymns to classical selections to currently popular songs.

Point out that music has great power over us; some music makes us want to dance, some makes us want to march, some makes us want to sit and think. Have the family participate by marching to some marching music and dancing to some dancing music.

Discuss the power of music.

Have family members analyze how each of the songs they have named makes them feel. Which of the pieces make them feel closer to our Father in Heaven, and which ones would not make them feel close to him? Are there any that would not be pleasing to him?

Point out that music has great power to inspire us and to bring us closer to our Father in Heaven and that it also has the power to encourage evil thoughts and acts. Give examples of some of your favorite songs (Hymns or other songs) that bring you closer to Heavenly Father. Explain how these songs help you feel the spirit.

Suggest that your family adopt a standard of singing, playing, or listening only to music that is pleasing to the Lord.

Watch the following video of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing a familiar primary song. Encourage your young children to sing along with them and pay attention to how they feel.
