New Testament Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – “God Is Love”

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

The Epistles of John teach us that God is love and God is Light. In this Come, Follow Me FHE lesson, you will learn more about overcoming the world. Our FHE lessons include three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

1 John 4:8

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

“Where Love Is,” Children’s Songbook, 138–39.

1. Where love is, there God is also.
Where love is, we want to be.
Guide us, his truths to follow;
Help us obey him faithfully.

2. Where love is, there God is also.
We think of him rev’rently.
Teach us to pray, to talk with him above
And know that he will guide us with his love.

3. The comfort of loving arms around us,
A song that makes us want to sing,
The happiness we feel when love has found us,
’Tis love we get when love we bring.

4. Where love is, there God is also.
And with him we want to be.
Show us the way and guide us tenderly
That we may dwell with him eternally.

Activity: Ask the children to share a few different things that give light and how that light can benefit us. You could show a picture of some of these different lights such as a candle, light bulb, or the sun.

Scripture: Read 1 John 1:5

Ask: How does Jesus Christ bring us light?

Share: Tell the children about an experience when you felt the light of Christ in your life.

Ask: How can we share the light of Christ with others?

Video: Watch this video on sharing the light of Christ with the world.

Testimony: Close with your testimony of family history and temple work.

Scripture: Read 1 John 4:8 and 1 John 1:5.

Read: In these verses, John describes God as “light” and “love.”  Throughout the rest of his epistle, he uses the words over again to describe God.

Ask: If you had to use two words to describe God what would they be? Why?

Scripture: Read some of Christ’s teachings in John 3:16–17; 12:35–36, 46; 15:9–14; 19:25–27.

Ask: What similarities do you see between the teachings of Christ and what John is teaching in 1 John?

Testimony: Close with your testimony.

Read 1 John 5 and “Overcoming the World” by Elder Neil L. Andersen to learn more about what it means to be born again and to overcome the world.
