- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

This week we begin studying 1 Nephi. Nephi’s family leaves Jerusalem then he returns to collect the brass plates with his brothers. In this Come, Follow Me FHE lesson, you will learn more about being willing to serve the Lord and the value of the scriptures. Our FHE lessons include three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

Scripture

1 Nephi 3:7

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

Hymn

Nephi’s Courage | Children’s Songbook, 120–21

1. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and get the plates
From the wicked Laban inside the city gates.
Laman and Lemuel were both afraid to try.
Nephi was courageous. This was his reply:
“I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.
I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.”

2. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and build a boat.
Nephi’s older brothers believed it would not float.
Laughing and mocking, they said he should not try.
Nephi was courageous. This was his reply:
“I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.
I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.”

3. The Lord gives us commandments and asks us to obey.
Sometimes I am tempted to choose another way.
When I’m discouraged, and think I cannot try,
I will be courageous, and I will reply:
“I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.
I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.”

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Scripture: Read 1 Nephi 4:6

Read: God had a plan for Nephi. Nephi’s faith allowed him to be led by the spirit to accomplish God’s plan. We do not always know what God has planned for us, but we can choose to trust Him and do the things He asks of us.

Ask: What does God want you to do?

Read: God is not asking us to travel through the wilderness to obtain the brass plates like Nephi. Rather he asks us to love Him and to love His children. He wants us to keep the commandments and strive to become more like Jesus Christ.

Ask: How does the Holy Ghost help you accomplish the things God wants you to do?

Video: Watch this video about Nephi’s willingness to serve the Lord.

Ask: How can you be more like Nephi and “Go and Do” when you are asked to do something?

Testimony: Close with your testimony.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Ask: What is something that is of great value to you? Why is it so valuable?

Scripture: Read 1 Nephi 5:21 together.

Ask: What makes the scriptures so valuable to Nephi and his family?

Video: Watch this video about the sacrifices made in the early days of the church to bring to pass the Book of Mormon.

Read: Nephi and his brothers traveled through the wilderness and made sacrifices to obtain the brass plates. Are we willing to make sacrifices in our own life to read the Scriptures? We each have easy access to the scriptures, but do we make time in our day to read them and learn from the words of God?

Ask: What can you sacrifice to make sure you are studying the scriptures?

Testimony: Close with your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read President Dallin H. Oaks’s message “What Has Our Savior Done for Us?” and ponder how the Lord has provided a way for you to do hard things.
