- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

Learning to resist temptation and put off the natural man is an expected and important part of our time on earth. This New Testament FHE lesson helps us find courage and hope in the knowledge that Jesus Christ knows the temptations you face and why they can be so hard to overcome. Each of our FHE lessons includes three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

Hymn

True to the Faith | Hymn #254

1. Shall the youth of Zion falter
In defending truth and right?
While the enemy assaileth,
Shall we shrink or shun the fight? No!

[Chorus]
True to the faith that our parents have cherished,
True to the truth for which martyrs have perished,
To God’s command,
Soul, heart, and hand,
Faithful and true we will ever stand.

2. While we know the pow’rs of darkness
Seek to thwart the work of God,
Shall the children of the promise
Cease to grasp the iron rod? No!

3. We will work out our salvation;
We will cleave unto the truth;
We will watch and pray and labor
With the fervent zeal of youth. Yes!

4. We will strive to be found worthy
Of the kingdom of our Lord,
With the faithful ones redeemed
Who have loved and kept his word. Yes!

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Video: Start the lesson by watching this story about resisting temptation.

Ask: What did you learn from this video?

Read: Satan tempts us to make bad choices. Jesus Christ inspires us to choose the right. He knows what it is like to be tempted and can help us. When we make good choices, we get closer to Him.

Activity: Make a list of good and bad choices the children will understand. Hold up a picture of Christ and have them take a step closer each time they hear a good choice.

Ask:
What are some good choices you’ve made recently?

Share: Tell a story when you either chose the right and felt closer to God or made a bad choice and felt farther away from Him. For older children, consider telling about a time when you were tempted to do something wrong and what happened depending on the choice you made.

Testimony: Bear your testimony of Christ’s power to help us resist temptation and make good choices.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Scripture: Read Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13 together. Make a list of how Satan tempted Christ and discuss how these temptations might be used against us today.

Read: Learning to resist temptation and put off the natural man is an expected and important part of our time on earth. We can find courage and hope in the knowledge that Jesus Christ knows the temptations you face and why they can be so hard to overcome.

Video: Watch this video from Elder Ulisses Soares on how Christ can help us resist temptation.

Ask: What do we learn from this video about resisting temptation? What does it mean to you to look unto Christ in every thought?

Share: As appropriate, share a personal experience about when remaining focused on Christ helped you to resist temptation or to make a good choice.

Read:
We can access the power of Christ more fully by seeking to be spiritually prepared. We can learn from the example of Christ in the wilderness of things He did to connect with God.

Scripture: Go through the scriptures in Matthew and Luke again. Discuss ways Christ sought after God and how we can do the same. Examples include seeking to be alone with God, fasting, and focusing on gospel truths when faced with temptations.

Testimony: Close with your testimony.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Read “Seek Christ in Every Thought” by Elder Soares. Record any promptings or thoughts as you read. Then, spend some time pondering on when you thought of Christ this past week. When did you think of Him and why? Ask yourself how you can better seek Christ in every thought.
