Hymn

I’m Trying to Be like Jesus | Hymn #78

1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;
I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers,

[Chorus]

“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”

2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying:

Lesson

FOR CHILDREN

Activity: Prepare for the lesson by writing gospel truths on plastic cups or blocks. These truths may include baptism, priesthood power, temples, the atonement, families are forever, and more. Begin the lesson by helping the children build a tower out of the cups or blocks. Teach the children that after the apostles died these gospel truths were lost for a time. You can then invite one of the children to knock over the tower. This represents the apostasy. They can then rebuild the tower to represent the restoration of the gospel.

Ask: Why do we need these gospel truths?

Share: Tell the children how these gospel truths have been a blessing to you.

Scripture: Read 2 Thessalonians 2:1–3

Read: We learn from these verses that there would be a great falling away from the gospel before Christ would return. This is called the great apostasy. We know that the great apostasy ended after the church was restored through Joseph Smith.

Video: Watch this short video about the apostasy and restoration.

Testimony: Close with your testimony of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Video: Watch this video about the apostasy and restoration.

Ask: What did you learn about the apostasy and restoration from this video?

Scripture: Read 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18 together.

Ask: What do you learn about the Second Coming of the Lord in these verses?

Scripture: Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1–10 and look for metaphors Paul uses to describe the second coming of the Lord.

Ask: What does Paul mean when he describes the second coming as “A thief in the night?”

Scripture: Read 2 Thessalonians 1:4–10 together.

Ask: How can you prepare for the second coming of the Lord?

Share: Share how you are personally preparing for the second coming.

Read: We all need to listen to the teachings of Paul and prepare now for the second coming of the Lord. If we prepare now, we’ll be ready for the Lord’s return.

Testimony: Close with your testimony.
