New Testament Come Follow Me FHE Lesson – What Lack I Yet?

- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

A rich young ruler asked Christ, “What lack I yet?” In this Come Follow Me FHE lesson, we take a closer look at how we can follow Christ, even when it is uncomfortable or hard to do so. Each of our FHE lessons includes three lesson plans for different ages, treat recipes, activity ideas, and more.

Matthew 19:20

The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Lord, I Would Follow Thee| Hymn #220

1. Savior, may I learn to love thee,
Walk the path that thou hast shown,
Pause to help and lift another,
Finding strength beyond my own.
Savior, may I learn to love thee—
Lord, I would follow thee.

2. Who am I to judge another
When I walk imperfectly?
In the quiet heart is hidden
Sorrow that the eye can’t see.
Who am I to judge another?
Lord, I would follow thee.

3. I would be my brother’s keeper;
I would learn the healer’s art.
To the wounded and the weary
I would show a gentle heart.
I would be my brother’s keeper—
Lord, I would follow thee.

4. Savior, may I love my brother
As I know thou lovest me,
Find in thee my strength, my beacon,
For thy servant I would be.
Savior, may I love my brother—
Lord, I would follow thee.

Activity: Begin the lesson by having the children draw a picture of themselves with Jesus Christ. Consider inviting them to draw themselves doing something they love with Jesus.

Video: Watch the following video together.

Read: In the scriptures, we learn some people brought children to Jesus to be blessed. His disciples got upset, but Jesus said the little children should come unto Him. Jesus loves children. He is your friend and can help you.

Ask: How do you know Jesus is your friend?

Read: We can be a good friend to Jesus by following Him. We can come close to Him. We can make good choices and obey the commandments.

Ask: What are some of the things Heavenly Father asks us to do?

Share: Tell about a time in your life when you keep the commandments and how it brought you closer to Christ.

Testimony: Close with your testimony of God’s love for His children.

Video: Begin the lesson by watching the following video to recap the story of Jesus and the rich young ruler. Before playing, ask everyone to ponder on how they might relate to the rich young ruler.

Ask: How might we all relate to the rich young ruler at times?

Read: On the road of discipleship, we should all take time and again to ask ourselves “What lack I yet?” This question can help us notice our weaknesses and allow us to improve. We aren’t meant to beat ourselves up or become discouraged by asking this question. Rather, we can be inspired to come closer to Christ? That doesn’t mean what He will ask of us is easy, but we can trust great blessings are in store from following Him in faith.

Share: Tell a personal experience where you did something hard in order to follow Christ. Or, you can talk about a gospel habit you worked on and how the process of improving helped strengthen your relationship with Christ. Ask others to share any experiences they’ve had as well.

Ask: How can we better remember the blessings of eternal life when facing correction or change?

Testimony: Close with your testimony of the Lord’s ability to help us change and do all that is necessary to inherit eternal life if we are willing.

Read the talk “What Lack I Yet?” by Elder Larry R. Lawrence. After reading, spend some time in prayer asking the Lord to reveal to you some things you can work on to better improve your discipleship.
