Hymn
Nearer, Dear Savior, to Thee | Hymn #99
1. Nearer, dear Savior, to thee,
Nearer, nearer to thee–
Ever I’m striving to be
Nearer, yet nearer to thee!
Trusting, in thee I confide;
Hoping, in thee I abide.
(Chorus)
Take, oh, take, and cherish me,
Nearer, dear Savior, to thee.
2. Nearer, dear Savior, to thee,
Nearer, nearer to thee–
Proved by my trials, I’ll be
Nearer, yet nearer to thee!
Humbly I come to thee now;
Earnest, I prayerfully bow.
(Chorus)
3. Nearer, dear Savior, to thee,
Nearer, nearer to thee–
Ever my anthem will be
Nearer, yet nearer to thee!
Loving thee, ever I pray,
Aid me thy will to obey.
(Chorus)
4. Nearer, dear Savior, to thee,
Nearer, nearer to thee–
Let me by holiness be
Nearer, yet nearer to thee!
When all my trials are done,
When my reward I have won,
(Chorus)
Lesson
Read aloud: We are given talents and gifts to help us fulfill our missions on this earth and to help us bless the lives of others. We have a responsibility to Heavenly Father, to ourselves, and to others to develop our talents and gifts.
Ask: What are some talents and gifts people have?
Share a personal experience about a talent you feel you have and how you developed it. Include a time you struggled with this talent and how you overcame it. If time and means permit, share an example of your talent as you talk. This can include showing your children a video of you dancing as a child, an old sketch you’ve done, or other memorabilia.
Ask: What are some things we need to have to build our talents? How have you worked hard to improve your talents and gifts?
Read aloud: Heavenly Father wants us to use our talents to bless other people. By using our talents, we can make others happy and even teach them about Jesus Christ.
Ask: When is a time that someone has shared their talents or gifts with you and it has blessed your life? How can we bless others with our specific talents? How can this talent be used to bring others closer to Christ?
Read aloud: Sometimes we may not feel very special. Sometimes our talents are not as obvious as someone else’s. There are many things we can do to learn what talents we have. We can pray to Heavenly Father to know what our talents are. We can try many different activities to find out which ones we really like to do. If we have our patriarchal blessing, we should study it closely and learn what gifts Heavenly Father tells us to grow. We can ask a trusted leader or friend what talents they appreciate in us.
Finish the lesson by having everyone choose a specific talent they want to work on this week, including how they want to share it with others.
