Hymn

How Firm a Foundation | Hymn #85

1. How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said,
Who unto the Savior, who unto the Savior,
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

2. In ev’ry condition—in sickness, in health,
In poverty’s vale or abounding in wealth,
At home or abroad, on the land or the sea—
As thy days may demand, as thy days may demand,
As thy days may demand, so thy succor shall be.

3. Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, upheld by my righteous,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

FOR CHILDREN

Use the tutorial below under the Activity section to build a DIY balance. Set aside.

Read: Isaiah 46:5

To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

Teach: Isaiah is writing here from the perspective of the Lord. He is asking what we could compare the Lord to.

Object Lesson: On one side of the scale, put small heavy objects, like coins. Leave the other side empty. Label the heavier side “the Lord” and the other side, “everyone else.” No one else is like Jesus Christ. He says so Himself in several more verses below.

Read: Isaiah 43:11, Isaiah 45:5–6, Isaiah 46:9

I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me…That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me.

Video: Help the children understand that the early shots in this Because of Him video are of amazing human feats, but that none of these feats can compare to what Jesus Christ did–for us.

Testify: Jesus Christ is our Savior and our hope for salvation. Without Him, nothing else matters. Whatever else we fill our lives with will never be enough. Nothing else can compare with the Savior of the world.

FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Quote: Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, “To those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, it is clear that the Father and the Son are giving away the secrets of the universe!”
Neal A. Maxwell, “Meek and Lowly” (Brigham Young University devotional, Oct. 21, 1986), 9, speeches.byu.edu.

Teach: It’s common to feel lost or confused–to not know how to proceed or whom to trust, but the Lord assures us that He isn’t keeping his ways a secret, but leading us by the hand in the way we should go.

Read: Isaiah 48:16–17

Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me. Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

Teach: God has provided many resources for us to find Him. We have the scriptures, the words of the prophet, and personal revelation given directly to us. We can bring the spirit into our lives through uplifting music, podcasts, Church magazines, attending our meetings, studying Come, Follow Me and more. We have so many avenues to find Him. His way is clear and lighted, we just need to trust Him enough to get on–and stay on–His path.

Video: President Nelson has often taught of the need to get and stay on the covenant path. The Lord has shown us the way we should go. It does not need to remain a mystery. The way forward is clear. Watch the video here.

Testify: There is no need for us to wander and wonder. Trust in the Lord and in His servants. If we seek to build our faith in Him and His principles, we must try His ways. If we follow in the “way we should go” that the Lord has provided for us, we will have clarity and peace.

FOR SINGLE STUDY

Consider or Journal: All of the demands we have on ourselves–our jobs, our callings, extended family, keeping up with a social life, and more–can feel overwhelming. It can seem like there aren’t enough hours in the day. We may be tempted to skip church so we can catch up on sleep, or not pay tithing so we can catch up on bills. It may feel like the answer to our challenges is the “easy way out,” but the easy way out often doesn’t align with getting and staying on the covenant path.

Read: Isaiah 40:28–31

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Consider or Journal: Verses 30 and 31 contrast what we might expect with what the Lord offers instead. We might think that the young (or the well-rested, or those who have more money from skipping tithing) may have everything they need–that their way is the easier way out. But the truth is if we trust in the Lord, He blesses us beyond our understanding. He renews us, strengthens us, and provides a way for us that cannot be opened to us if we don’t trust in Him.

Read: Isaiah 41:10, 13

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Trust that the Lord is holding your hand through your challenges. He is helping. As you watch for Him, you will find Him and find new strength in yourself–because of Him.

Video: This young man didn’t know if God was there, but when he started looking for Him in the little things, he began to receive answers to his prayers, and trust that the Lord was with him. His trials haven’t all gone away, but he has learned to have hope and patience in letting the Lord reveal Himself a little at a time.
