- Advertisment - Save on Great LDS Gifts

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of enduring well. He carried out His Father’s will and triumphed. If we follow Him on His covenant path, He will lead us to salvation. Learn about the power and tenderness of the Atonement of Jesus Christ with our three family home evening lessons this week.

Isaiah 53:4

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

I Stand All Amazed | Hymn #193

1. I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me,
Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me he was crucified,
That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died.

Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me
Enough to die for me!
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.

3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat,
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.

Have you ever been chosen last for a team? Or not been invited to a birthday party? Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong or weren’t being included? Every one of us has felt like we don’t fit in.

Ask: How does it feel to not be included? How would it feel to not be included at church?

Read: Isaiah 54:2

Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes.

Explain: Enlarging a tent means making the tent bigger. Lengthening the cords means spreading out to make the sides of the tent to make more room inside.

Ask: Why does the Lord want us to make more room for people inside His kingdom?

Teach: The Lord invites everyone to come to Him. Everyone is included in His kingdom and in His church.

Read: Isaiah 56:8

The Lord God which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.

Ask: How can we make sure everyone at church knows they are welcome at church? How can we “lengthen our cords” at church so everyone knows they belong?

Video: Watch this video on how we can help everyone at church know they belong with us.

Video: The Bishop’s Storehouse is a special place. Because of fast offering donations and many hours of service, the Storehouse can provide individuals and families in need with food and necessities. Watch this video of how the Church, through Bishops’ Storehouses, provides for people in need.

Teach: The people who receive from the Bishop’s Storehouse are being literally supplied “with milk without money and without price.” The Lord teaches in Isaiah that everyone who comes to Him as our living water, who honestly comes thirsting after righteousness, can also freely receive.

Read: Isaiah 55:1

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Teach: The Bishop’s Storehouse provides freely. The food and other items cost no money. They are not earned. But certain criteria still must be met to receive what we need at the Storehouse.

Ask: What does the Lord ask or require of us to become eligible to receive salvation?

Read: Isaiah 55:6

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

Teach: The Lord wants us to seek Him. He wants us to trust in Him, to call on Him. He wants us to follow Him, keeping His commandments, so that we may become more as He is. He doesn’t require money, and we can’t earn salvation, but we can receive it if we come to Him to find it. This is contrary to the way the world often does things, requiring an exchange in order to receive something, but the Lord doesn’t operate this way.

Read: Isaiah 55:8–9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Testify: Man might require payment or an exchange to receive something wonderful, but the Lord’s ways are not our ways. He doesn’t need anything from us, but what He wants for us is to learn to become as He is. If we seek after and follow the Lord, He will lead us to salvation.

Consider: When we think about Jesus Christ, we remember His mercy, His love, His example, His perfection. But during His own lifetime, many despised Him and mocked Him. He was hated. He was put on a false trial and sentenced to death. He knows deep sorrow, more than we can comprehend. Read these verses from Isaiah describing the grief Jesus endured on the Earth.

Read: Isaiah 53:2–6

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Consider or Journal: If your life could be described the same way as Jesus Christ’s, how would you feel? Sometimes when we endure trials, we can be tempted to feel like God has forsaken us.

Video: Watch this video on how one woman who had endured four painful traumatic brain injuries was able to discover the Lord’s love for her.

Consider or Journal: How can feeling and expressing gratitude through all of our trials make them easier and often quicker to endure? What else can make times of trial more tolerable?

Standing in a small, tight circle, hold a folded flat sheet or blanket between two or three people. Demonstrate how when you unfold the sheet, a little at a time, and back up, the size of the sheet gets larger and there is more room for everyone in the circle. This is what it means to lengthen cords and strengthen stakes. We become bigger, stronger, and more robust as we make room for everyone. There is room for everyone, no matter our differences, in the kingdom of God.
