“5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ”

FHE Lesson Hymn

When I am Baptized #103 Children’s Songbook Book

1. I like to look for rainbows whenever there is rain
And ponder on the beauty of an earth made clean again.
2. I know when I am baptized my wrongs are washed away
And I can be forgiven and improve myself each day.
I want my life to be as clean as earth right after rain.
I want to be the best I can and live with God again.

*For Younger Children* Read or share  Preparing to Do Baptisms for the Dead and discuss the different ways of how you can prepare to go to the temple and be worthy.

When you are 12 years old, you may have the opportunity to go to the temple to be baptized and confirmed for those who died without the opportunity to accept the gospel. Here are some ways to prepare to enter the temple and feel the Holy Spirit there.

How to Prepare

  • Have faith in Jesus Christ. Be baptized and confirmed a member of His Church. Boys must hold the Aaronic Priesthood.
  • Keep the commandments and make good choices. Repent when you do something wrong.
  • Have an interview with your bishop or branch president. If you are worthy, he will give you a limited-use temple recommend.
  • Help do family history work so you can take family names to the temple, if possible.
  • Study the scriptures and Church publications (such as the October 2010 Liahona) that will help you understand temple work.

On the Day

  • Dress in your church clothes. Be clean and well groomed.
  • Read the scriptures or Church magazines, or listen to uplifting music.
  • Pray to feel the Holy Ghost when you are in the temple.
  • Don’t take books, electronics, or music on the way to the temple that will not help you feel reverent.

In the Temple

  • You will be given white clothing to change into. White is a symbol of purity and cleanliness.
  • At the baptismal font you may be able to watch others being baptized for the dead.
  • While you wait, you can pray and ponder. The temple is a special place where you can be close to Heavenly Father.
  • You will be confirmed for people who have already had their baptisms performed for them.
  • Think about those you were baptized and confirmed for and the blessings that will now be available to them because of your temple service.

*For The Whole Family*  Read through and share some from The Redemption of the Dead and the Testimony of JesusDiscuss about the things that you can do to make time to go to the temple, or if you do not yet hold a temple recommend talk about what you can do to prepare.

Our work for the dead bears witness that Jesus Christ will come again to this earth. In the final verses of the Old Testament, Jehovah declared, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

“And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”

In an inspired commentary on this scripture, the Prophet Joseph Smith stated, “The earth will be smitten with a curse unless there is a welding link of some kind or other between the fathers and the children, upon some subject or other—and behold what is that subject? It is the baptism for the dead.”

The vicarious ordinances we perform in temples, beginning with baptism, make possible an eternal welding link between generations that fulfills the purpose of the earth’s creation. Without this, “the whole earth would be utterly wasted at [Christ’s] coming.”  Elijah has, in fact, come as promised to confer the priesthood power that turns hearts and establishes the welding links between the fathers and the children so that once again what is bound on earth “shall be bound in heaven.”  When he came, Elijah declared, “The keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.”

We are anxiously about the task of searching out our fathers and mothers of generations past and binding them to us and us to them. Is not this the strongest possible evidence of our conviction that Jesus Christ will come again to reign upon the earth? We know He will, and we know what He expects we will have done in preparation for His return.

In the scriptures, the spirits of the dead are sometimes referred to as being in darkness or in prison.  Contemplating God’s glorious plan for the redemption of these, His children, the Prophet Joseph Smith penned this psalm: “Let your hearts rejoice, and be exceedingly glad. Let the earth break forth into singing. Let the dead speak forth anthems of eternal praise to the King Immanuel, who hath ordained, before the world was, that which would enable us to redeem them out of their prison; for the prisoners shall go free.”

Our charge extends as far and as deep as the love of God to encompass His children of every time and place. Our efforts on behalf of the dead bear eloquent witness that Jesus Christ is the divine Redeemer of all mankind. His grace and promises reach even those who in life do not find Him. Because of Him, the prisoners shall indeed go free. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
