FHE Scripture

Scripture

1 Corinthians 3:16-17

16- Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17- If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

FHE Lesson Hymn

Hymn

Hinges–Primary Song #277 or How Gentle God’s Commands Hymn 125

Hinges

1. I’m all made of hinges, ’cause ev’rything bends
From the top of my neck way down to my ends.
I’m hinges in front, and I’m hinges in back;
But I have to be hinges, or else I would crack!

How Gentle God’s Commands

1. How gentle God’s commands!
How kind his precepts are!
Come, cast your burdens on the Lord
And trust his constant care.

2. Beneath his watchful eye,
His Saints securely dwell;
That hand which bears all nature up
Shall guard his children well.

3. Why should this anxious load
Press down your weary mind?
Haste to your Heav’nly Father’s throne
And sweet refreshment find.

4. His goodness stands approved,
Unchanged from day to day;
I’ll drop my burden at his feet
And bear a song away.

FHE Lesson

Lesson

*For Younger Children* Talk about the importance of our bodies & the things our bodies can do. Explain the Word of Wisdom & show the carnation object lesson (Be sure to prepare about 4 hours before FHE). Testify the importance of keeping the Word of Wisdom.

Brainstorm things that our bodies can do. (For example: blink, taste, eat, swim, run, jump, smell, etc.)

1- Who gave our us our bodies?
2- What can we do to take care of our bodies?
3- Have you heard of the Word of Wisdom? If so, what is it?

Explain the Word of Wisdom:
Do not smoke
Do not drink alcohol, tea or coffee
Eat healthy foods
Exercise

4- Why do you think Heavenly Father has given us the Word of Wisdom?

Show the object lesson of the carnations (needs to be prepared 4 hours before FHE)

You will need:
2 white carnations
food coloring
2 clear glasses

1- Fill one glass with an inch of water and add a few drops of food coloring. Cut one of the stems of the flower so it is about 6 inches. Place this flower in the glass with food coloring about 4 hours before FHE.

2- Place the other flower in a glass with clear water.

3- Once 4 hours have passed the flower in the water with the food coloring will start to turn the color of the water. The colored water has affected the carnation, just as what we put in our bodies will affect us. (ex: milk makes our bones strong & bananas increase brain power while cigarettes are addicting & can give us cancer.)

Testify of the importance of  keeping the Word of Wisdom.

*For Teenagers or Adults* Discuss the Word of Wisdom (D & C 89). Do the carnation object lesson (Be sure to prepare it 4 hours before FHE). Discuss the blessings of keeping the Word of Wisdom. You may want to share the story of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach & Abed-nego (Daniel 1)

FHE Treat

Treat

Corn on the Cobcake or Red, White & Blue Cheesecake

Corn on the Cobcake

Ingredients:

White and yellow jelly beans
White-frosted cupcakes
White decorating sugar
Yellow Starburst candies
Corn holders
Corn plates

Instructions:

1- For each ear, press rows of jelly bean kernels onto three frosted cupcakes. Line up the cupcakes and sprinkle decorating sugar across the tops.

2- To make a candy butter pat, microwave a Starburst for about eight seconds, stretch it into a melted-butter shape, then set it on top of the center cupcake.

3- Add a corn holder to each end of the cob, and serve on a corn plate.

Red, White & Blue Cheesecake

Ingredients:

CRUST
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
6 tablespoons butter, melted

FILLING
3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup sour cream
3 large eggs, at room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

TOPPING
1 pint fresh blueberries

Instructions:

1- Heat the oven to 325º F. Grease a 9-inch springform pan and line the bottom with waxed paper.

2- Put the graham cracker crumbs in a medium bowl. Add the butter and mix with a fork until evenly moistened. Press the mixture over the bottom and up 1 inch of the sides of the pan. Refrigerate until ready to use.

3- In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl when necessary. Beat in the sour cream until blended. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract. Pour half of the batter into the pan.

4- Put the jam and lemon juice in a small saucepan and warm over low heat, stirring often, until melted and smooth (about 4 minutes). Drizzle one fourth of the jam mixture in stripes over the batter in the pan. Spoon the remaining batter over the jam, then drizzle with 1/8 cup of jam. Reserve the last of the jam mixture to drizzle over the cheesecake.

5- Swirl the batter gently with a thin knife to marbleize it slightly.

6- Bake the cheesecake until firm around the edges but still slightly wobbly in the center, 70 to 80 minutes. (Don’t worry if your cheesecake cracks while baking or cooling.) Set the cake in the pan on a wire rack, run a knife along the inside edge to loosen the sides, and let it cool completely. Wrap the cake in plastic and chill it for at least 4 hours.

7- Take the cake out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving. Remove the pan sides and place the cake on a platter. Warm the remaining jam mixture until liquid, then drizzle it over the cheesecake. Serve with the fresh blueberries. Serves 12 to 16.
