Hymn

Count Your Blessings | Hymn #241

1. When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings; name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your blessings;
See what God hath done.
Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings;
See what God hath done.

2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings; ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your blessings;
See what God hath done.
Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings;
See what God hath done.

3. When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you his wealth untold.
Count your many blessings; money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven nor your home on high.

Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your blessings;
See what God hath done.
Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings;
See what God hath done.

4. So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged; God is over all.
Count your many blessings; angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your blessings;
See what God hath done.
Count your blessings;
Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings;
See what God hath done.

Lesson

For Children

Begin the lesson by asking: What is gratitude? How do you know when you are feeling grateful?

Read aloud: Heavenly Father has given us many blessings. We have been taught by the scriptures and prophets to be grateful. When we have an attitude of gratitude, we can find more joy. However, life isn’t easy. We go through trials and face difficult times. Things may be so hard we ask, “Where is God? Doesn’t he care?”

During times like these, it can be hard to feel grateful, but it is possible. Finding the good things when times are hard can remind us that God is close to us and loves us.

Ask: How can we notice good things during hard times?

Read aloud: When we try to find a reason to be grateful, even when life is hard, we grow closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. This isn’t easy. Yet, as we try our best, Christ will help us.

Finish the lesson by sharing any personal experiences and bearing your testimony.

For Teens & Adults

Begin the lesson by asking: What does it mean to you to praise God?

Read aloud: To praise God is to glorify God, to celebrate in his goodness and offer up thanks for his hand in our life. The feelings of gratitude and thankfulness are closely associated to praise. There are many times in our lives when we want to praise God. We praise God when he answers prayers, when he bestows blessings upon us, and when important life events happen.

Ask: When have you praised God in your life?

Read aloud: Though we are commanded to praise God throughout all the seasons of our lives, it can feel impossible to do when we are hurting. Whether we are going through a physical or mental illness, are facing confusion, or going through a difficult trial, the idea of praising God can seem unhelpful.

Ask: Is there a time in your life when you were able to praise God through pain? How were you able to do it and what effect did it have on you?

Share a personal experience of your own.

Ask: What are some ways we can learn to praise God through pain?

Finish the lesson by bearing your testimony.

For Single Study

Sit down and make a list of all things that are hurting right now in your life. Then, make a list of all the reason you have to praise God. Go through each list in prayer, giving time for each.
